ok so i was coming home last night and i just got mass effect and i was soo happy because i heard the game is awesome (besides some glitches here and there), so i took my 360 downstairs to hock it up to the plasma. well when i set it up, it fell over and hit the stone where the fireplace is. S H I T

so now every time i put a disk in it either pops back open, says theres nothing inside, and the major, UNREADABLE DISK. so i'm giving a good guess saying that the cd drive is shot because everything else works fine. i found this cd drive off of ebay. now i saw that you have to do some other things beside just plug it up and play. does anyone have any ideas what to do??

i looked into replacing the drive, it looks really complex. so i'm going to see if ebgames or someplace can repair it. if anyone knows a place that does that, please tell me

I can almost guarantee that no retail store will attempt to repair it. Your best bet is to go to a mom -n- pop computer store and see if they will do it.

What I would do is take it apart, look for any problems like belts came off or things bent/broken which can be unbent or repaired, then check the lens and other parts to make sure it's not dirty. Relube every moving part and put it back together. If none of that works, then http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-Toshiba-TS-H94...1QQcmdZViewItem

read xbox-scene.com. It is very complex to replace the drive. Send it back to microsoft on warranty.

It's a DVD drive.

Do NOT replace it on your own. It may be very simple, but Microsoft just yesterday banned over 4,000 xbox 360's for having mismatched DVD/motherboards. Certain models go with certain boards, and certain serial #'s of parts go with others.

With some mismatched parts, you can play burned games, so therefore, the 360 gets banned.

Just man up, and go through the repair center.

Yup.. when there's a chance for it getting banned just go through the MS repair service.
Don't screw with something as important as an Xbox. LOL

*UPDATE*
It appears that modified fw is NOT being detected, and is instead once again due to 'bad' discs. Keep in mind that the only full proof way to make a 1:1 backup is to do it yourself. iXtreme is as fullproof as it can be, in that it validates everything it possibly can from a firmware point of view, but a game can have slight data change somewhere, most commonly in DMI. Or it can be due to early copies being watermarked so to speak.

This is why you run the risk of being banned on xbox live if you pirate games. Always remember that you run a risk doing such actions.

In regards to game data being properly validated, xdvdmulleter is a tool that has a constantly maintained database to validate backups against retail copies to ensure full stealth. If you have a samsung SH-D16x and would like to contribute to the project to prevent future Live bans, please join #stealth360 on Efnet, IRC.

swap it, there's no harm in it. Just don't pirate games.

^^ I just did some research on it. You can play just fine. You need to reflash the dvd drive by putting it in your computer and using the software available on the xbox sites. Or you can get another of the same type of drive and swap out the mainboard on it.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=630569

That's like saying you have to send your car back to Hyundai because the clutch went out. There's nothing wrong with performing a repair on your own stuff, you just have to have the same end results as M$ would. You're not renting the game system from them. It's a tool which allows you to buy more games.

DTN, you don't play on Live, so you don't know man. Tell that bullshit to the 4000 members just banned yesterday.

To the original poster, here's what you CAN do to not get in trouble. Just keep in mind, MS just put the 360 warranty to 3 years for the red ring of death.

1. Open your 360 and find your model of DVD Drive (WHUPS! YOU JUST LOST YOUR WARRANTY! HOPE YOU DON'T GET THE RED RING OF DEATH, AS YOU ARE NO LONGER COVERED!)
^^^
Some sites say you can find out the drive you have without opening the box, but you still have to open your 360 to replace it, so you still lose your warranty.
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD..._Comparison.htm

2. Find another DVD drive somewhere that is the same model, on ebay or a repair site like llama.com.

3. Order the DVD drive.

4. Hope it doesn't get damaged in shipping, and install it.

5. Pray you don't get the red ring of death, the most common failure on the 360. Both of my 360's have red ringed once. If you are out of warranty, it is a $150 fee plus shipping to get it repaired.

So, IF you don't get your box banned by using unmatched hardware, you still lose your 360's 3 year warranty against the most common failure.

It's up to you.

BTW, I DID replace my XBOX 1 DVD drive when it went tits up, not hard at all, but they didn't have the safeties they do today on the 360.

Some threads you might wanna read, by folks that KNOW what they are talking about when it comes to 360's, and also MOD them.

Must have matching firmware with your current DVDdrive.

Sites where you can get DVD Drives.

http://www.etech4sale.com/Philips_VAD6037_...-id-213036.html

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?s...earch&fgtp=

Seem to range from $50 to $80 shipped. For a bit more than that, you can keep your warranty, if it's not already covered by it, or get a new one when your replacement comes back.

There are hundreds of threads on these sites about DVD Drives, just review some of them, and you'll know whether or not you wanna do it.

Keep in mind, DTN doesn't have a 360.

YOU CAN ALSO DO A QUICK SEARCH ON GOOGLE AND SEE FOLKS TALK ABOUT THE PREVIOUS BANNINGS. It's up to you.

Lastly, a site with 32 pages so far of people who were banned.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...630440&st=0

Yes, they have modified firmware/mismatching firmware, and most were playing burned games, but I'd rather not risk it myself.
