Need Computer Help
Thats a good start. BTW, you can get a good barebones system (Athlon XP or Sempron) for like $200 or less. After that, you only need RAM (1GB for $90, 512MB for $45), a decent hard drive (80GB for $60 or less), and a CD drive, which I have several of as well. You could even get a DVD burner for under $100. This system will be 100 times faster than any Emachine from Best Buy.
Dmitry, you said the PC133 did not work in the PC100 slot? You either have a really specific motherboard, or forgot to take out the old PC100. You can't run both types in one system. Most PC133 chips just run at 100 Mhz when put into a slower system. Sometimes specific boards like those from HP or Compaq can only run specific types of RAM. Each motherboard is different.

My other computer that I built like 6 years ago had a 350mhz board and 128mb ram. It ran Autocad 2000i fairly well. But I'm sure the 3d part would lag.
I now have Autocad 2006 which wants a bit more RAM (512). And I'm sure the current computer is better than a 350, so its a just a guess now that it will work ok.
edt: The day before I found this computer, I had bought a 120GB hard drive for $60, and a new Dynex network card for $5. I also have 2 cd drives, 2 3.5" drives, and a DVD drive. So I've got all the good components, just need something to run them faster. lmao.gif
My GF emailed me the info:

Ok, so I gave in!!!!!
I went ahead and bought these from CompUSA since they were on sale last week for $249:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_in...332173&pfp=cat3
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_in...29524&pfp=srch1
I bought that and my girlfriend is gonna buy a gig of ram for it.
So after shopping around for computer stuff for the first time in 6 years. Wow!!! All the Neon bullshit, just like import tuning. lmao.gif I bought a blue LED fan for the current case for $3. Pretty neat light show. lol
And what I found really cool was the SCSI cables they have now. They have them in single strands!!! Even in different colors. That REALLY cleans up the case. But do they do well with the heat?
So I'm real excited about getting back into computers. I'll probably start throwing a little cash into it every now and then. My next purchase is gonna be a new tower with 500w power supply. I can get a killer deal on this one:

And for about half that price. cool.gif

Alright, so I am definately a computer guy, and I used to work at best buy...I would never trust a Dynex power supply. They just plain suck. They are wicked light (you can tell how good a power supply is by how much it weighs...honest) and blow very easily. If a breaker is tripped, a powe spike, some type of short...power supply is gone. www.pricewatch.com is where I would go for my components.
...oh yeah, the case itself is pretty cheesy, but not bad if you get it for the employee cost. Then you could always upgrade the power supply later, or make sure to run a good UPS for the machine. The board and processor you got will work nice together, and a gig of ram will make a nice machine for you (if you are reusing the hardrive, you might want to reconsider and invest in another one).

Thanks for the headsup on the PS. I might just upgrade if it ever goes out. The price of the case itself seems pretty hard to pass up. Although there's a few on ebay that are going even cheaper. But not sure I can trust those anymore than the Dynex.
