It's a type of mobile GLID. A full sized glid is a badass piece of equipment. It shoots a UV/IR Laser out and "paints" a target. When you paint the target, it comes up on your side with a bunch of information: distance, direction, and grid quardinates to the location. It will make people go blind without even knowing it. They can also guide rockets ,smart bombs and artillery bombs with wings called rap-rounds, and We have people in the Army trained speciffically on that job alone. They're called FiSTers. It will make people go blind without even knowing it.
Fisters use ones that are mounted on top of a "armored" vehical and weigh a few hundred pounds. From the looks of it, the one in the video was pretty dang small mobile and shoulder mounted. The helos were using it to aim through their night vision heads up display.
We did a shit-load of training with those guys. I'm a radar repairer in training to be a medical equipment repairer. When we did counter-fire training, we'd fake a pre-planned target, then a whole bunch of people would do calculations, clear air space, clear ground of troops and make sure everything was good to fire. Then the fisters would paint the target and the howitzers would lay guided rap-rounds onto the target, destroying about 300 meters. My radar tracked those rounds comming back at the pre-planned targets and they were pinpointed within a few meters from about 18 kilometers away at the MPRC. pretty fvckin' accurate if you ask me. And none of that would be possible without people like ***REDZMAN***! He used to tell the howitzers, fisters, and the radar exactally where they were within a meter a long time ago.

Driving Tib,
You are correct about the things you've said about FST'ers and stuff, but you are incorrect about who those people are, and the moblie GLID does not have an IR pointer on it. Its strickly a PRF coded firing Laser system, just like the SOFLAM. And its designed to guide precision weapons, not smart weapons. Weapons like Hellfire, Laser Guided Bombs, and Copperhead arty rounds. RAP is not a guidable munition. RAP (Rocket Assisted Projecticle) is a round with a super charge on it to allow it to fire further than standard rounds.
Also, the pilots of the helicopters do not have Night Vision in their helmets or their Heads Up Display (HUD). They wear AN/AVS6 or AVS9 NVGs. Just wanted to clarify so guys understand the underfunding of the US Military. There is better equipment but we don't have it because it cost money. But what we have, is workable and reliable.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The video that you've just seen is of two Direct Action Penetrators (DAPs) of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR). . Armaments include a mix of multiple 30-mm Chain Gun, racks of four Hellfires and 2.75 in rocket pods, 40 mm grenade launcher or trainable 7.62 mm Gatling guns. The personnel on the ground are members of Operation Detachment Alpha 053 (ODA 053), Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, better known as Green Berets.
The individual that is sparkling the target are actually two people. Callsigns Blacksmith 053 and Blacksmith 045. These two people are Air Force personal that are attached to major Army manauver units and Army Green Berets (SFG (A)) and RANGERS. We lived, trained, and fought with the Army since we graduated Basic Training. We are definatly more green than blue. We are called TACP (pronounced TAC-P). It stands for Tactical Air Control Party. We are a very small group in the Air Foce, approximately 900 personnel. Out of that 900 there is a group known as Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (J-TAC). A JTAC is a trained and qualified individual that can plan, execute, and control airstrikes against enemy targets, utilizing helicopters, fighters, bombers, tomahawks, predators, anything thats being dropped from something in the air to hit something on the ground. Our bread and butter is what is called Close Air Support (CAS). For those of you that have seen [/u] We Were Soldiers [/u] the scene where the radio operator was talking to the planes and dropping bombs on the NVA and again when he calls in the helicopters to hit the hill is what we are trained to do. Its difficult especially now with the huge effects weapons have, but we are trained to be able to tell the pilot how and when to drop that 2,000lb bomb and kill the bad guys but not the good guys that are 300 meters away. For more information on TACPs aka ROMADs (Row-Mads) (Recon, Observe, Mark, and Destroy) click this link, there's a good amount of reading.

On the left you should see a menu, click on TACP 411, then select Description, and after your done reading that, click History.
The sparkle that you see is an Infrared Pointers called an IZLID. Nicknamed the lightsaber because it looks a lot like one, 10-12 inches long, 2 inches wide tubeshape. It utilized 4 AA batteries and can sparkle as far as 8km and I've had aircraft as high as 45,000ft see it.
THE SITUATION
I, BrakeRP, was in Iraqi for my fourth tour with ODA 045, my callsign Blacksmith 045. Our area of expertise was the Tikrit - Samarra area. We linked up with ODA 053 and their JTAC Blacksmith 045, his name is Zach. 053's expertise was Mosul. It was 1740 (5:40pm) as we were headed up the MSR in a convoy of a total of 4 hummers. When three guys lit us up with PKCs and a single RPG. All four trucks immediatly returned fire with Ma Duece (M2 .50 Cal machine gun). everyone else dismounts and we start to flank. The three individuals ditched their two PKCs and the RPG launcher and ran through the reeds, and into the river Enemy Tactic, break contact, run back to an area of advantage. The advantage could be anything from an area set up with home made bombs to a whole bunch of guys that are looking to mow you down. We were 30 mins from EENT (sunset) and an hour from when we could use night vision. Blacksmith 053 was very familiar with the island that the guys swam to. Known as Gilligans Islandbecause people constantly get stuck out there when the river surges.
Originally ODA 053 was going to cross the river at nightfall with 045 pulling overwatch security. Then both Blacksmith elements had shot insurgents with an aerial platform in over a week and suggested calling for air support instead of people ourselves at risk with one team in the water and not able to fire back, or the island rigged with bad boom booms. Usiing our thermals (not the night vision) we knew the three were still there and we couldn't see anyone else. We called up 160th, who were based out of Mosul, and they were more than willing to play. When they checked on Blacksmith 053 took control of the lead bird (callsign Stalker 11) and I took control of the #2 bird (Stalker 12). Stalker 11 confirmed the 3 hotspots on the island plus an additional 5. I won't go into the clearance we had to get because we didn't know if the other 5 were animals, bad guys, or civilians, but we finally got clearance and you see the rest.
I promise you that is the story of that video. There is so much of that video you can not see due to security reasons.
