Man Gets 45 Years for DUI
http://www.ksee24.com/news/local/Sti...152314525.html
Holy crap. Dude probably should lose his license for forever, but 45 years in jail?
How’s this for zero tolerance?
Stephen Andrew Hall, of Fort Worth, Texas, was recently sentenced to 45 years in prison after having a few too many beers and a few too many DWIs.
A repeat offender, Hall received his fifth conviction for Driving While Intoxicated – and the local justice system has had enough. Last summer, Hall was caught on the road with twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
The local assistant district attorney told a local news station: “The 45-year sentence was fitting considering his prior DWI history. [The] sentence ensures that he will not be able to drive a vehicle on our roads for a very long time.”
The 59-year-old, who asked the judge to decide his fate, will be eligible for parole after he serves a quarter of his sentence, in 11 years.

Reading comprehension FAIL. Salient points: this cat is a MULTIPLE DUI offender. As in, he has been caught repeatedly so likely he has a lifestyle/habit of getting wasted and putting everyone on the road at risk. Then you also missed the part where he's up for parole in 11 years.
I wish people would ease up a bit on the hyperbolic sentencing reactions to weed and start transferring them to alcohol.

If he's careless enough to receive 5 DWIs and be driving with twice the legal limit, what would keep him from driving if you merely suspended his license? I'm sure one of those times he was driving without his license. I know of people who lost their license for 6 months on their first DUI. Apparently, those type of consequences aren't enough.

"Not enough" is one way of looking at it, "wrong approach" is another.
Perhaps he should take a trip through the trauma ward at the local hospital, or ride in the meat wagon scraping drunk drivers off the road. To be fair, the judge would have had their reasons for such a harsh sentece. Some people simply won't learn.

That's the new rule in Texas. That's why he's looking at 11 to 45 years.
That murderers get less is not an argument against this sentence.

3 strike rules are retarded. Make the punishment for certain crimes more severe if it's necessary, but don't set up these retarded rigid rules. I saw a documentary where a guy was doing 50 years because he stole $40 from a store (not burglary, non-violent theft) because it was a third strike (all three crimes very minor). FIFTY f*cking YEARS. He was doing time with murderers that were in for 8-10 years. If you honestly think it's a good idea for him to do 50 years while actual murderers do 10, you are retarded.
Life in prison for three DUIs? Even without any accident occurring? I'm sorry but that's ridiculous.
