Romney defines “middle income” as $200,000-$250,000 and less

Updated – 12:22 PM EDT: According to a 2009 Tax Policy Center study of income distributions, earners making $180,000 and more are in the top 5 percent of the population.

10:40 AM EDT: In an interview with “Good Morning America’s” George Stephanopoulos, Mitt Romney was asked: “Is $100,000 middle income?” “Middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less,” Romney replied.

“I said that there are five different studies that point out that we can get to a balanced budget without raising taxes on middle income people,” he continued. “Let me tell you, George, the fundamentals of my tax policy are these. Number one, reduce tax burdens on middle-income people. So no one can say my plan is going to raise taxes on middle-income people, because principle number one is keep the burden down on middle-income taxpayers.”

Obama has said in the past that he’ll cut taxes for middle-class families making $250,000 and less per year, but the way Romney put it certainly doesn’t help the narrative that he’s out of touch with the middle class.

According to the Census Bureau, the current median household income in the U.S. is slightly over $50,000.

Here’s the video, at the 5:15 mark:

I really don't understand how people think he is the right choice.

I don't recall anyone saying he's the "right choice."

I, as many here, say he's merely a slight improvement over the current nonsense.

The "right choice?" What a joke. No one in politics today has the sack to do what is needed to really shape this county up.

edit (topical): IIRC the 250k number is thrown around because that is some assumed median for small business owners.

I agree sbo's should be included in the middle class count, but that number does seem a bit high.

Wasn't calling anyone out on that.

I think Obama is a bit more in touch with reality.

Romney just hasn't said anything yet that speaks to me or my thoughts on what would be good for the country.

So you're opting complacency while touting names and ripping down a candidate that you've not even listened to. Talk about a mixed signals

I recall a series of promises for the first 36 months ALL of which failed. If that isn't cause enough for another kind of HOPE or CHANGE I have no idea what is. You ask me, the "hope and change" bs was just "read my lips" revisited. People learned then, what is different today?

No, I've listened to him I just don't agree with what I hear.

Obama hasn't done what I've hoped to see him do, but I see him moving in the right direction, even if it is very slowly.

All political slogans are just that, hell the R's were using "We built that" in a mocking reference to a misunderstood quote (on purpose, I'm sure there's a word for that but it slips my mind at the moment) for an entire day of their convention (told ya I listened to both sides).

$200k = not middle class.

Husband and Wife each make $100k.

Husband and Wife are considered... "upper class" ?

28% tax on $200k = $56k so now their income after taxes is $144/2= $72k per year per person after income taxes. Not considering money spent on insurance or money put into retirement of course.

So if $72,000 per year is not considered middle class, what is it? Is $72,000 upper class? Is there another class tier that needs to be created now?

I'm not considering educational tax credits or deductions for having children, mortgage insurance, and charitable donations of course, I'm strictly looking at the tax rates.

as far as taxes go until everyone is paying the same rate say 20% across the board without all of the bullshit loopholes and credits its never going to be fair. I am in the real middle class 35-50k range and I pay as much taxes as someone making 3 times that ammount....

My entire family survives on less than $72k/year. We're comfortably middle class.
