NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.
The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.
“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.”

It's 40 light years away so it will take many generations before we are able to reach it by satellite or more.

Cool discovery but it's not anything that will matter to us, our kids, or even their kids. We're still trying to figure out how to get to Mars, let alone a planet thats light years away.

It can matter, we just won't be going there or sending a probe until there are some advancements in propulsion technology.
With updated telescopes already being constructed we could verify that there is life with similar chemistry to our own. We won't be able to rule out life, but we could potentially confirm it. We will no doubt be pointing radio telescopes towards this star and could catch transmissions if there happen to be advanced lifeforms. That's far less likely, but worth a try. It'll only take radio signals 40 years to get here vs. thousands to billions of years from most of the rest of the stars in the sky.

I don't put it completely past the realm of possibility that we figure out some way to fold spacetime or make a wormhole, so it wouldn't surprise me if we send something there and get signals back in our lifetimes . . . but it won't surprise me if we don't, either.
What would be reeeeally f'd up is, if we point our radio scopes at these planets and find the equivalent of TV broadcasting, and figure out how to decipher it, and then figure out we are watching the collapse of their civilization, after they figured out we were broadcasting intelligent signals also . . . and then they dissolve into total war, destroy themselves, and send some missiles our way out of spite!
