Went up to Paducah on a day trip, and got to drive one of these 9,000HP beasts. We maxed out at 9.3MPH and had a gentle cruising speed of 8.1MPH, but it was pretty darn awesome. Sorry for the Camera phone pics (click thumbnails)

This tow boat housed three 3,000 HP engines (V16) - each about the size of an SUV

- Stock picture - not the boat I drove, nor did I have any barges in front of it.

It's so weird, I expected my movements of the controls to be instantaneous, like a car, but about 3 minutes after I steered it right, it started drifting left! I was drifting all over that darn river.
Here's Rocky, Captain of the Southern Star
If built today, some of those tow boats would cost $18-20 million to build

You should have asked if you could bottle up 500 or so horsies and take it home lol, they wouldnt even miss it!
good stuff, not too often you can say you drove something with 64 times more power than your daily driver came with.

Don't you mean...TOOT!! TOOOOT!!!!!
haha!
Yeah the propellers are huge. I couldn't get any good pictures of them because of the shadows (taking pics with my phone) but there was a mural on one of the walls that I did take a picture of.

hoto_081407_017.jpg]Also found a picture of the WORLD RECORD TOW... 82 barges and 1 tow boat being pushed by one Motor Vessel. It was delivering the tow boat up the Mississippi River, and it wasn't helping to power the barges, so it was considered a barge/cargo.
73 empty barges, 9 loaded barges, 1 tow boat = world record. Imagine having to walk up and down those barges to make sure they're fully secure. The length of 5 barges is equal to 1/4 mile.

that is some crazy shit right there.
I think I posted this before... Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine <--Click for Details
Imagine 108,920 hp at 102 rpm. 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm.
Look at that crankshaft! (this one's for a 10cyl. version, the 12 is even longer!)
