Default I bought ice skates. How to brake? :)

I bought ice skates.
Hw to brake on them? i found only 2 ways
1) to brake on side (edge of the ring),
2) to find beatiful girl that will help you to brake.

I prefer 2nd method.

But how hockey-players brake???

You mean braking?

If your skating in a straight line, and you want to break fast. Twist your lower half to the left or rigth 90Degreese in the direction you want to face after stopping. Before you twist make sure your kneese are bent and you are around a 45 Degree angle to the ice so that when you twist your lower half fast you don't fall flat on your face. This is no beginners stop. Takes awhile to master. Concidering your still new to skating, I would stop by draging one of your feet behind you side ways. So it kind of looks like a backwards " T " . You know what I mean? Once you get the hang of everything, it will come to you very easily.

^^^ thanks, corrected

I can skate a bit but I should practice with braking. I already can brake as you said T-method (with one leg behind the other).

So I need to turn quicly to legs on 90 degree at the same time? On what leg and what part of blade (toes, heel?) should I put more weight?

yes a quick 90 Degrees. Both legs. Once you turn 90degreese your feet should be like this = . The lower line is your strongest foot and the top your other one. You should stop evenly on the surface of the skate. If you want to stop faster put your weight down into your feet. So your shaving the top of the ice. Once you become more experianced there are other techniques for stopping in different methods etc.

Thanx guys!

Tanc, great link, thanx!

On the 2nd April there will be one more ice ring, just 10 minutes on foot from my house. And it will be working all-the-year-round. smile.gif So I'll be practicing.

easiest way to learn how to brake is find the dead zone on your skate, that is the area that by just moving your foot at a certain angle it will stop gripping the ice and allow you to slide. when you turn your foot 90 degrees try to simulate the angle you found the deadzone and you will start to slide, to stop faster just angle a little more

I don't know if this helps you but it is a very similar motion to stopping on skis. You need to dig the edges in, but not so much that you topple over the other way. It just takes practice and a little touch.

what demon fox said....

stand on the ice and practice pushing out with one foot, shaving at the ice. that will show you the angle your blades need to be at when you stop.

i went from roller to ice. it was funny. i was roller stopping on the ice. its hard, and leaves HUGE goudges. plus, you could prolly break your ankle if you do it while going fast enough.
