They’re saying 40 grand is now the average income for most people in the work place. Where you live, how far does 40 grand a year get you? M’eh lifestyle, poor lifestyle, or really good lifestyle?
Tennessee has one of the lowest cost of living in the country. If you're a married couple with no kids, each making $40k, you can live very comfortably. I say this assuming you're reasonable in your spending and have decent common sense.

You can make ends meet acceptably well here on two $40k/year salaries per household. I would say pretty solidly into middle class.
$40k is not a typical wage around here though from what I've seen, most are either far lower or far higher.

Here in California, not a whole helluva lot. You could probably get an apartment in a flea motel in a questionable neighborhood, a car that won't pass smog, and eat a lot of ramen. That changes if you live with roommates, but cost of living here is pretty high.

Well, 30k a year is minimum wage in Australia, so 40k a year would have you living sketchily. The cost of living in most Australian cities is frankly stupid.

I've been able to support a family, graduate college and live off less than that for years now. Hopefully not for too much longer as it's definitely not "livin the life."
