So, one day it just stops working. The laptop is about 3 years old and I wasn't the last one to use it so i can't explain the events leading up to it breaking. It's a regular dialup modem that is built into the laptop and it refuses to dial out. I can't figure out why. Can it be replaced? I'd think it would be attached to the board inside so it might be out of the question. Any ideas?

first you need to figure out if it's the modem or windows drivers. (most likely the modem)
download knoppix and boot off of it. Try to dial out to your isp, if it works you know it's windows, otherwise it's the modem.

Possible but not likely. Alot of times they use ports to affix a modem to the board. You can order the board if you pull it out, call the manufacturer, and then give them the part number on the board. Your best bet is to buy a PCMCIA modem for your laptop. You can get them at best buy. Just make sure you say PCMCIA modem, alot of people say PC card modem and end up with a PCI card.
