If anyone is interested, this Saturday from 1200pm to Sunday 1200pm will be the annual field for for Amateur Radio around the world. This is a worldwide event, so there should be one in operation near you. Here is a promotional video showing various communications methods that are used by HAM's. Some clubs operate a "Get on the Air!" event which allows the public to talk on the radios, even though they are not licensed. I encourage you to swing by and check one out!
