I'd rather have a Ford Truck and/or Mustang than any Honda.

That's pretty funny, detroit redwings and coffee. i think that one's on the mark.

Although it's not entirely a ford vs. honda thread, i would never pick a Honda. At least we've got 35 years of Ford behind rallying and the name, "Cosworth" to place a passing grade. They also have their muscle cars.

it's weird.. my parents are very much american car people.. they have owned from all three major brands (and a couple of their european cousins) and from their experiences..

Chrysler products do not hold up.. period, end of sentence.

Chevies are not bad, and while mechanically sturdy, have terrible interiors that literally fall apart (my mom's sunbird being a prime example)

Ford products (they had mercuries) were mechanically sound, but never had any interior problems.

Now mind you.. to be fair, the DC cars my parents had were from the late seventies and early eighties.. the Le Baron my mom had before her sunbird was built like a tank (and less fun to drive) but it was always in for some niggling problem.

The Chevies have mostly been trucks. Decent work vehicles that ran no matter what you did to them. To the point where my Father's old truck was killed by his G/F (my parents are seperated for 10 years now) when she did not pay attention to the fact that the truck was overheating. While badly wounded, it still limps around the farm they live on as a work truck.

My mom's sunbird.. mechanically perfect. The Exterior is perfect (not bad for a 12 year old car) but the dash literally broke away from the centre console in the heat of one summer and warped so badly it cannot even be glued back down.

The Fords have been a Mercury Marquis (the midsized sedan) and a grand Marquis. Both gave absolutly no problems for the years that we had them. Granted, my parents never kept either car longer than 6 years.. but my father was working in real estate back then (and then in radio sales) and tended to tack on tons of miles in a year.

Over all, Ford and Chevy have been good to my parents. Save for the leBaron, DC has been bad. The stationwagon my parents bought in 1980 had it's MANUAL transmission lock up in 2nd gear when the car was 9 days old. The stationwagon before that, literally just fell apart as it went down the road (liked the rear facing back seat though)

These are the American cars I've owned:

--1985 Dodge Aries Wagon. 2.2L carb 3spd auto (dad gave it to me for my 17th bday)
@ 145000 miles, the head gasket blew at 80mph, still ran Interior was great, no squeaks

--1976 Chevy Nova. 250ci inline six carb, TH350 3spd auto ($350)
@ 95000 miles tore the fvck out of that car and it still ran like a champ. Interior had it's issues

--1985 Dodge Caravan 2.6L mitzu carb 4spd ($1)
@ 132000 ran great till I wrecked it. No interior problems

--1986 Plymouth Reliant. 2.5L TBI 3spd auto ($400)
Ran fine till I traded it for 79 Pontiac GP. When my sister had it, it got broadsided my a 20ft box truck and still ran fine. No interior problems

--1979 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ 305ci carb V8 4speed auto
@ 45000 engine developed three separate knocks top to bottom. Iinterior fell apart 2 weeks after I got it.

--1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. 307ci carb V8 4spd auto ($100)
@108000 it died, motor and transmossion. First transmission, Was the crappy 200-4R overdrive unit. Crappy Olds 307 V8 developed engine knocks and overheated. Interior was great. Factory Delco radio thumped till I sold it.

--1979 Chrysler LeBaron 225ci inline six carb 3spd 904A automatic. (Sister gave it to me after the distributor crapped out).
@ ??????? miles, I replaced distributor and it ran as smooth as a damn sewing machine. I killed it by accidentally dropping it into 2nd at 70mph. overrev pwns

--1987 Dodge Dakota. 2.2L carb. ($1) basic interior, no headliner or radio
@ 135000 when my Dad had it he replaced the shattered 3.95 rear end with that from of a V6/V8 (3.55). It seriously weakened the underpowered motor. Engine gave out on me at said mileage. Spun three bearings, pistons became intimate with head.

--1988 Dodge Dakota 4WD. 3.9L V6 TBI, 4spd auto. ($250)Parts truck for 1987. blown SMEC (ECM)

I have never owned a Ford product. All of my friends who have owned Fords had serious problems. These ranged from years 1985-2004. From major mechanical failure (suspension, almost killed her) to complete driveline failure (2001 Explorer 3.0L).

My sister just sold her 1995 Plymouth Neon. 208000 miles and the timing belt tensioner gave out and killed it indefinitely.

I will still own any (pre-DC) Chrysler product or GM product.
