NOTHING in the movie industry is written in stone.
Hell, some films they even produce, film, develop, cut/edit, etc...etc... then they still never see the light of day.
My guess is that there will be a "Rash" of Racer movies now. The movie made 41,000,000 it's first weekend and it cost half that to make. That movie is PURE PROFIT fot the studio....

well it just broke even, it cost closer to $38 million to make, but yes by next weekend, the would have doubled the cost of it:

I wish there was a way to unite all the import crowd together for 1 more weekend, and keep it at #1 and show them how AI is not even close to F&F

The PG-13 action drama pulled into theaters with a high octane ESTIMATED $41.6 million at 2,628 theaters ($15,830 per theater).
Fast, which only cost $38 million to produce, appears to be well on its way to a very profitable $100 million in domestic theaters.
Fast's average per theater was the highest for any film playing in wide or limited release this weekend.

U pulls a $40 mil 'Fast' one
Fuel-injected bow blows doors off 'Dolittle'
Universal's street-racing actioner "The Fast and the Furious" sped to $41.6 million in estimated three-day grosses in a turbo-charged opening that's already outpaced production costs and fired up talk of a sequel.
"Fast and Furious," produced for an estimated $22 million, was developed at U from a series of street-racing articles in Vibe magazine. Originally planned as a March release, U vice chairman Marc Shmuger pushed to have pic moved to summer after a pair of promising test screenings.
"This movie really speaks directly to the audience, and that's different from other summer blockbusters, which are packaged for their audiences," Shmuger said.
"F&F" hides a last scene after pic's closing credits in what appears to be a set-up for a sequel, and producer Neal Moritz acknowledged such talks with the studio are already under way as writers noodle over a follow-up script.
Universal credited marketing boss Peter Adee for a campaign that kept pic from being pegged as "just another driving movie."
Marketing also featured public-service spots with a don't-try-this-at-home message. But studio execs said there's been no sign of problems with street-racing copycats so far.

Dam right bat!!
There has been a slew of car thefts in maryland recently by teenagers. The news media here are saying that movies like gone in 60 seconds and movies like the fast and the furious are sending teens the wrong impresssion. When in the hell was there a single car theft in the fast and the furious? News suck!
As for the movie, the movie should pop another $20+ million this weekend. There really isn't any competition. I don't think A.I is going to do anything. The import crowd still might give it a higher pop. By time the movie leaves the US. It will be around $90-$100 mill. Then when it hits overseas, it should do very well. I am guessing $180-$200+ million total. All in all Sequel!!

This movie had no chose but to make money. It's to orignal not to. As for a sequel, the buzz is out. The import scene will be bugging the hell out of universal until it is done. It won't have to come to that. Universal knows they have a cash cow on their hands, and they are going to milk it for all its worth. smile.gif
