Do you think that if someone actually manages to develop a substitute for oil...
It will manage to replace it?
Imagine if someone finds a proper substitute for oil, superior in every aspect, eco friendly and renewable, basically free.
Do you think the world will still adopt it?
I don't think so, since oil is literally the only source of income for many countries, I don't think the oil industry would just let it slide and see their prophits crumble overnight.

There is never enough free because everybody wants it. The buggy whip-makers protested when cars took over and nobody needed their product any longer, but you know what?
If a cheap and usable alternative came along, we would go to it pretty quick. Unless it's nuclear because Jimmy Carter is a fool.

Sure. They don't have to develop an alternative, eventually gas will be $40 per gallon. If that happened today, regardless of scientific development, we'd do something else. As long as the alternative seems worse though, we'll stick with oil.
There are some heavy politics involved behind closed doors though, both advancing and resisting change.
