No I have a Vista Ultimate CD that will ONLY allow a clean install. You can try and start it from Windows but it won't allow an "upgrade" install (even though it'd be upgrading to the same thing).

I JUST deleted ALL partitions (there was only one) and created a new one (fully formatted) for the NEW Vista Ultimate Installation. That gets all done, I make a name for the admin user and let my computer re-start several times.

I come back and there are three internet explorer pages open on msn.com (default home page), ..that I did not open.

That is ALL it has done since then, it hasn't refreshed on me a bunch of times or poped open 37 new ie pages. But that's VERY weird that it still did it AFTER COMPLETELY WIPING THE HARDDRIVE. whiskey tango foxtrot?

I dunno.. Hopefully it doesn't pick up and start going bezerk again. I'll try all the spyware/virus scan's you guys have suggested but Windows Live OneCare just did a complete scan and found no malicious spyware or viruses..

Mozilla FTW!

yea, AVG finds nothing either. Nor does McAfee. I'm starting to think this is some setting gone fubar or something. Like the setting that executes iexplorer.exe is on repeat (is that possible?).. I'm getting into computer talk I don't understand...

Is there a way to DISABLE iexplorer.exe (that might solve my problems) and I'll just use Forefox or something else (hopefully it doesn't start up with Firefox pages..)

EDIT:
__________
I'm starting to notice iexplorer.exe processes running at about 1,000K Memory Usage WITHOUT Internet Explorer pages open. I'll have one page open with one process at like 10,000K Memory and then like five other identical processes but without the ie pages actually there..

that normal?

^^ no that's not normal.

I don't know which site you visited, but you're definately having some spyware/virus problems. Close those other windows and look for abnormalities in your startup. Did you do the selective startup with MSConfig?

1. avast antivirus. real time scanning that pwns everything else. super small memory usage as well. probably my favorite utility ever.

2. spyware doctor by pc tools is probably the best spyware/malware remover out there, but it does cost money.

a fresh format and os install will of course fix things.

No antivirus program pwns everything else. Every company makes a different product which can detect different threats. One will pick up A and not B, the other will pick up B and not A.

PC-Cillian Online anti-virus scan/removal tool

This thing came in handy so many times when I worked as a tech fixing computers... It has never failed me and best part it is free. Just run it and see if it fixes the problem, it does greyware/spyware/virus removal.

Since you're getting extra running processes, apparently from a virus, and extra running IE's, it may not be a virus, could be spyware.

Anyways, I want you to go to here http://download.hijackthis.eu/hijackthis_199.zip and extract that somewhere you'll remember, maybe ur desktop, since it self executes the program w/o intalling. Open it, run a scan and save log file, log file will be on desktop, and keep the hijackthis window open! Then go here http://www.hijackthis.de/ and either paste the whole text from the logfile, or just browse until you find it, click analyze, and ANYTHING the is stated as bad, or RECOMMENDED to get rid of, DO IT, with the tick boxes in the program.

If you need any more help, feel free to ask wink1.gif

Ha! That's what I thought. I just did that. (twice) When the OS finishes installing it immediately starts the pop-up shit.

Dweet,
That site is run off some java applet crap. You have to understand I JUST completely wiped my harddrive and rebooted Windows Vista. I dont' have ANYTHING anymore and with the way this pop-up shit is going it's hard to do anything (like install a new java appley crap, or whatever...)

Thanks Defcon.

I tried the scan and found some things listed as "bad" But it won't let me get to them..

Apparently,

For some reason the system denied access to the Hosts file.
If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this click Start, Run and type:

notepad "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as "hosts." with quotes, and reboot.

I did that, and opened the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts in Notepad and this is all I got

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

I don't know what the HijackThis message is talking about? "find the lines reported and delete" huh? where?
and then save as "hosts." ?? save what? the notepad file?

..and then reboot. ....

FYI, this took like an hour to type because of the damn refreshing. LOL

Oh yeah and Defcon

Immediately after the "system denied access to the Hosts file" message, this popped up

Everyone already covered everything that I might have suggested to you... and since I know zero about how Vista operates, my only advice to you is this....
Install WinXP. Every single tech-savy person I know who installed Vista went back to XP within 2 weeks. I don't even plan to touch it until there are some patches out. I've heard stories about all sorts of wierd crap happening with it.

I'm doing that now. I'm wiping the harddrive again (3rd time) and deleting all partitions. Creating a new partition for WinXP and completly formatting it. And we'll see if the pop-up shit starts again.

If not, then it's got to do with the Vista DVD (the problem must of migrated it's way onto the disc). is that possible? i have no fvcking clue.

problem is, i only have an OS for 30 days (activation period). I have a legit copy of Vista but not so much XP. hurumph..
