Ok heres the deal. I havent used my cd drive in I dont know how long so I decided to put a disc in there and it will not read it. Or any disc for a matter of fact. The computer says its working, but its not. The computer is a Compaq S5000V and the driver is a ASUS CD-S480/AH. I tried unintalling the driver and restarting my computer and that didnt work. It won't read music cds, games, etc.

Thanks in advanced

CD or DVD drives seem to have a life of about 3 years, less if they're used very frequently, or not at all. I've had a number go out on me, and there's nothing you can really do about it. Go ahead and get another one, and replace it.

Did you uninstall any cd burning software before it happened? There's a fix for that on the microsoft site.. it's a bit of registry editing.

Most likely broken if you can't hear it spin. I have gone through 4 on my computer.

blow it out with compressed air. unless the motor is broken that'll put a bit more life into it. Otherwise replace it. Optical drives are SUPER cheap now. well really any drive is.
