So I boot up my comp, (vista home) everything loads fine. Vista login window comes up, I log in, but it takes a little longer to load after login than usual. Than all I get is black screen, than my Documents folder pops open, and thats it.

No icons, no desktop, no start menu, just black with the documents folder. Every time I start windows. I can get everything working if I go looking for the programs in the folders. When I minimize firefox, it minimizes the same way as it would on a tool bar, but just without one. I can than take it and move it anywhere on the black desktop I want. I tried system restore, that did nothing. Right click on the black doesn't work.

If I close the documents folder, I'm screwed, and have to restart. ctrl alt del, brings up everything like it should.

Everything works, except I have no desktop..... wtf

Hit ctrl-alt-delete and select Start Task Manager. Click on file, new task and type in explorer.exe

Now hit the start button, go to run, type in regedit.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Make sure there there is REG_SZ named SHELL and it has explorer.exe as the file.

If java's doesn't work do a full harddrive scan c:>properties> tools> etc. then a sfc /scannow (put that in run)

if that doesn't work it's usually just a screwed up profile, try safe mode. Sometime you can fix profiles other times it's just easier to make a new one, move over files and delete the old.

when you get into safe mode login as administrator /w no password. And create a new profile.

Thanks guys, java that worked.

It's funny because I was thinking, maybe I should just run explorer, but when I opened up the processes, explorer was already running so I didn't bother to try it.
