not really interested in the money involved in learning how to, but where the heck does someone get a start on drifting? I doubt being an idiot and risking your life on twisty roads is the correct answer.

Around here the SCCA has drifting events that you can learn at and practice, plus there are several other drifting clubs that have events at local race tracks.

Do they make special tires for drifting or do you just need to have a few sitting around and burn through them.

You don't need special tires to drift. Most amateurs I've talked to go to a used tire store and buy the cheapest used crap tires they have for rears since they're just going to burn them up. When you get really high powered cars going very fast like the pros they usually have tire sponsors but even then they're not "drift" tires, they're whatever tire the company wants to promote. Falken for example runs the Azenis RT-615 tires on their sponsored drift cars. That's an autocross tire.
