Airsoft toy gun shipment comes in without the orange tip and this is how the ATF react?

"With minimal work it could be converted to a machine gun." - Stupid ass ATF agent.

For the love of God, please don't let him breed. And fire his stupid ass for good measure.

gotta admit though, if someone is seen with that outside, they are asking for trouble. just think of how agitated cops get if they saw that out in the street, or in a school zone.

That's true, but the orange tip would be the only issue then. It's illegal to sell an airsoft without one in the US (but not much of the world). Painting the tip orange would suffice to make them comply. But yeah waving one like that around in a menacing way is a good way to pull off suicide by cop.

Let's assume for a second that they're not overreacting. I was thinking about how this could be converted to a firearm and I did come up with a possible - although highly unlikely - way that it could be feasible. If the lower receiver is true enough in design to the M-16 that you would be able to connect an AR-15 or M-16 upper to it and have a functional weapon. In order for that to be the case, there would need to be a properly located firing pin capable of striking the primers, the mag well would have to be made compatible with real magazines, and the action of the fire control parts would need to be capable of interfacing with the upper of an AR-15 and cycling it.

I know that a lot of high end airsoft guns are very similar to their real counterparts, many accept accessories, stocks, etc. from the real thing. As far as the BATFE is concerned the part of an M-16 or AR-15 that is the firearm itself is the lower receiver. The firing chamber, barrel, etc. detach as a unit and are not considered firearms and can even be bought and shipped through the mail legally. A M-16 lower receiver is considered to be a machine gun.

An AR-15 upper receiver can be attached to an M-16 lower receiver and function fine. The opposite is true also, a M-16 upper receiver can be attached to an AR-15 lower and function fine. The lower receiver is what determines how they fire, so an AR-15 lower with an M-16 upper will still be semiautomatic and not a fully automatic machine gun.
