Man Shoots His Penis; Police Urge Holster Use
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Authorities in Arizona warned citizens Sunday to use holsters -- not waistbands -- to hold their handguns after a man accidentally shot himself in the genitalia and leg.
27-year-old Joshua Seto accidentally shot himself with his girlfriend's pink handgun -- tucked in the waistband of his pants -- as he walked from a parking lot to a Fry's grocery store.
The bullet struck his penis, before continuing through his left thigh.
Seto, who is still recovering from his injuries, may face criminal charges for his carelessness, Chandler police detective Seth Tyler said Sunday.
"If you are going to carry a handgun on your person, use a holster, not your waistband," he said.
FOX 10 has obtained the 911 call the couple made after the shooting:
Dispatch: "OK where in his body did he shoot himself?"
911 Caller: "on the penis."
Dispatch: "OK how old is he?"
911 Caller: "he is 27 years old."
Dispatch: "is he still conscious."
911 Caller: "he's still conscious there's just a lot of blood... we're just sitting right outside in the parking lot."
Dispatch: "get a dry cloth or a towel."
911 Caller: "a towel, OK"
Dispatch: "apply direct pressure to where he's bleeding... don't look at it!"
911 Caller: "OK I did look at it and it looks pretty bad."
Dispatch: "right just keep constant pressure to stop the bleeding."
Tyler was unsure of the type of gun, or whether it had a safety that was off. He also says it's unclear if Seto has been released from the hospital or suffered any permanent damage.
