I'm buying a new motherboard that has the following on-board audio codec:

VT1708B 8 -Channel High Definition Audio CODEC
Supports S/PDIF out interface,Multi-streaming teconologies and and Jack-detect
S/PDIF out port at back I/O

Does anyone knows if it produces a good quality sound??

Thanks.

The on board codecs aren't that bad but if your really looking for high quality sound look at something like the sound blaster x-fi series. If your just using it for basic audio then I wouldn't really bother getting an additional card. I have a Realtek HD ALC888 onboard audio chip and I'm pleased with it.

I had 5.1 on board with my gateway and upgraded to the soundblaster x-fi. Truely the best upgrade I could have done with my multimedia. Huge difference. HUGE!!! No joke. It really made my THX Logitech 5.1 system shine. It sounded good before, but it seriously sounds amazing now. Best thing I have done to my semi-new computer thus far.

Thanks for the responses. I think for now I will be keeping the on board audio. Later I'll probably upgrade to a soundblaster card.
