there are TONS of free options.. those are the only ones i would honestly bother with.

right now i am using the following on my computer:

ad-aware FREE edition
f-secure client security (not free, but if you want a copy, i am a 'dealer') VERY good
AVG anti-virus FREE edition
Windows defender (comes with vista)
malwarebytes FREE (been using this lately, seems pretty extensive)

the f-secure client security is really nice.. has a very badass firewall with app control.. basicaly any .exe that tries to start up, it asks you if you want to accept or deny. apps you always want to be accepted, you can select ALWAYS ACCEPT.

it gives you all kinds of updates to new security threats that are spreading, auto updating, custom scanning, anti-spyware, email scanning, logged intrusion attempts, etc.

its my main protection for the computer, but it also takes a while to run a full scan, so i use the others as backups since i have disabled real-time scanning in fsecure, so it doesnt bog down the computer.

I personally use Norton. The 09 version has been stripped down a lot, and it installs a lot faster than 08. Just stay away from McAfee, it will block important updates, such as SP1 for Vista.

I'v never had any luck with Norton. Right now, I use Avast, it's free and catches a lot of things it seems. I had Avast and Norton both installed and operational on my new laptop, avast caught 4 malwares, norton didn't do a thing.
