My name is Robert and I'm new to the whole experience of modding cars. I've had friends over the years who've done mods and have been interested in seeing what I could do with my own 97 Tiburon. I've watched a friend mod and subsequently burn through an 02 WRX (drove it like a moron) and another happen to totally rice a Honda Del Sol. I think I could do a better job and not be irresponsible like them.

However, first things first, I need to get my RD1 into better condition. I'll be going to the classified section soon, but I am looking for a front exhaust pipe (part no. 28800-29052) and hopefully some replacement panels.

I've kept my car as clean as I could, but I got it used and it had some dents and dings.

I look forward to the learning experience and the excitement of modding.

Welcome to the site! You will find loads of info on here. Before you post things, search. Its very useful and saves people from rippin ya lol...

How many miles do you have on the current motor?
What are your HP goals?
How much $ do you have to spend?
Lookin to do body, engine, or ice work..or all 3?

If youre looking for an exhaust pipe, might as well get a brand new 2.5" catback exhaust with a hi-flow cat convertor and magnaflow muffler. Find a local muffler shop and ask for a price. The cat and muffler get from ebay. Or you could find a used exhaust system from someone on here.
Answer some of these questions and we will be able to help ya out a little better.

Thanks for all the welcomes!

It's the original motor; about to turn 100k. My intention is to either replace it (if possible) with a 2.0 and put in the 1.8 rods (which I've seen mentioned), and ultimately reach right around 200hp. I'd even be more than satisfied with the 172hp the 2.7 is pulling in.

Unfortunately the car is an automatic. I'm suspecting this will hinder the true potential of the car, but I don't know. I'm still interested in doing what I can.

As far as cash; I'm on a low-end budget (I'm 22 and self-sufficient) but would be willing to take some time and invest.

I'd like to start out with refining the exterior; nothing terribly flashy. I'd even be satisfied with getting the body to factory finish; the paint is rough in spots and the dents I have are substantial. Unfortunately the damage was all hit and run in parking lots. I'll get pictures up soon.

I'm not terribly concerned with the interior, it's fairly clean. I'd certainly like a better CD player (current one doesn't even work) and perhaps some different colored dash lights. Obviously when I get a turbo I'll invest in an A-pillar gauge setup. I may change some finish on interior parts; but I'm confident that I can do that myself; I've worked in a finishing shop (for pianos, eh) and own a quality airbrush and understand applications and finishes.

yes having an auto will hinder the true potential of your car. but there is always the beta2 manual swap you can do...

if you're trying to make your car fast (200whp in a tib is pretty quick), then the first thing you're going to need to do is ditch the auto transmission. hyundai AT's suck balls..(actually i've seen the delta ones do pretty well under even high boost, but the ones in our RDs do suck).

why buy a stock exhaust pipe? just buy a cat-back...

nice intro post. it's good to see folks who have searched around the forum a little bit and know what they're talking about before they post.

too bad you're not the original owner, you could have a new motor put in lmao.gif

If you want around 200whp with out turbo...
headers
Catback exhaust
Cold air intake
1.8L cam comes out of an elantra can get one in the junkyard (or beefer cams if you want to spend the money)
Intake manifold--either airram if you can find it or someone is makin one for us now or just bore out stock to 58mm
Throttle body--new one from kspec.com or bore out stock to 58mm
Pulleys
Higher compression with the 1.8L rods
Maybe even some NAAAWWZZZ (nitrous) lol
Upgrade your fuel pump to a 255lph (can get them off of mitsubishi)

First and fore most I would swap out your auto--> a manual transmission a lot of members have done this.
Exterior--you have an rd1 so you ahve a lot of choices from flyryde.com
Interior-- you could just paint your dash and door panels like a lot of members have done if you want to add some color
