Default Introduction to HyundaiAftermarket.com

Hello, Everyone,

My name is Eric Torres and I use the screenname tron1. I live in Puerto Rico, having returned to the Island in October 2001. Prior to this, I was in the active duty military.

I purchased my Hyundai, a 2001 Brio GL (Accent GS?), in January 2002 and immediately started looking for ways to customize it. It is listed in CarDomain under http://www.cardomain.com/ride/544875.

I have a number of physical challenges caused by my military service, including the full use of my hands; despite this, I have done most of the work on my car myself. I hope to learn from the experiences and knowledge of those who have already modified their cars in ways similar to how I intend to modify mine.

Another member of this Forum, 03-Accent-03, was kind enough to suggest I come over and take a look.

I'm looking forward to communicating with you.

Sincerely,

Eric Torres

Dear busy_squirrel,

Now that is a funny picture; most unexpected, and very appropriate.

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Dear 187sks,

Thank you for taking the time to write. I appreciate the communication.

I do have some questions to which I need answers, under many topics. Of greatest importance to me are converting the rear drum brakes on my Accent to disc brakes, and widening all four fenders to accomodate wider wheels and tires.

I realize that you probably have better things to do than to answer questions from someone who is undoubtedly a "newbie", but here goes...

I've been reading the posts on several forums regarding converting the stock rear drum brakes on the Accent to disc brakes. On some forums I've read all the way back to 2005, and I must say, there are quite a few suggestions. Some seem too easy; some too complicated: whether they are bolt-on, fabricated, pure Hyundai or an amalgam of different makes.

Needless it is to say... I'm confused. I really don't even know which type of Accent mine is -- LC, LC2, or some other code.

From what I have read, there are many knowledgeable and highly skilled contributors, having done this very same thing to their cars at some time or another. My question is, if one were to make the conversion now, how would one go about it?

I'm basically looking for a conversion that uses readily-available parts (no machining) and is simple to install using common tools. Like I stated in my introduction, I'm physically handicapped (I'm also not too mechanically inclined), but I'm certain that with patience and clear instructions I can do the conversion.

Can anyone help me?

Contact me through this forum or directly through e-mail. My address is ericsobrinos@aol.com.

Thank you for taking the time to read this far.

Sincerely,

Eric Torres

No problem at all! Your Accent is an LC.

Before I answer your brake question I want you to answer a couple of questions to help me help you better.

Why are you wanting to convert to rear disc brakes? Looks or better braking?

If for better braking performance what are you planning for the front brakes to keep a good braking distribution? (front brakes do 20% of a car's braking) If you change to disc brakes without upgrading the front brakes you'll lock up the rears early which is not very safe.

Would you rather do more work or pay more money? There is a bolt on rear brake conversion available from Atelier HP for around $1000. Aside from that you'll need to source rear discs, calipers, and have a custom bracket made. It's not that hard and if you got all the parts together I'm sure a shop wouldn't charge too much to make the bracket.
