Default g'day all

g'day mates. okay, i'm not australian but i do want to thank vision and the members i've yet to meet for access to this community.

i have an 06 elantra and i've been looking for info on customizing. specifically, right now i want to put wide tires on the car while retaining the same overall gear ratios. the tire companies [discount, et al] tell me it isn't possible to go wider than 205 but i read of a fellow who had 225 tires on his elantra. i was thinking of 235 on mine.

can anyone point me to info that will let me know how wide i can go with stock rims? can i switch to 14 inch rims, will they clear the calipers?

for the money, this is a great little car. i want to set it up for maximum fun under 70 mph. my friend has a mercedes that is terrific at speeds in excess of 100 mph but driving at those speeds can put one in jail or the morgue, so luckily i can't afford a mercedes.

the elantra fits the bill for me. i'm looking fwd to members suggestions. best christmas wishes to all.

Hi. What size rims do you have? Also the numbers you posted there are widths not tire heights.

So, what sort of tires are you looking for? Semi-racing tires, performance street tires? performance all seasons?

What is your stock wheel diameter?

the elantra has 195/15 on it. i believe the tire height is 60. if i can put 235 tires on it, i think i will have to change rims, maybe go to 14 rims, if they will clear the calipers. the 14s would also give a nicer ride and make the handling a bit livelier.

i used to race triumph spitfires and i put bias ply tires on the one i used on the street. it allowed me to slide it around at slower speeds. so, i will just use general purpose radials on the elantra. nothing fancy. i just need to find out the best way to add wider tires to the car. has anybody gone to wide tires on an elantra?

I think some 14's might fit, but that it'll depend on the wheel. I don't think all will.

Before you start I suggest that you measure the distance between your strut body and the inner fender lip and see if a 235 will even fit in a best case scenario. You may need to roll your fender lip.

You will have to change wheels more than likely to fit a 9.25" wide tire on a wheel sized for a 7.7" wide tire.

Your tires are about 24.2" tall overall.

Tires that would keep your overall diameter or be close:
235/35/18 - 24.5" <--these exist
235/40/17 - 24.4" <--these exist
235/45/16 - 24.3" <--these exist, but are rare
235/50/15 - 24.3" <--these exist, mostly/all race tires
235/55/14 - 24.2" <--these either don't exist or are very, very rare
