Whats everyones opinion on grounding an amp
for the best ground possible? Grounding it to the chassis near the amp, or running ground wire back to the negative terminal on the battery?

Definitely ground to the chassis. Running a negative wire all the way back to the battery is retarded when you have a HUGE wire already - the entire chassis.
You might want to upgrade the battery ground (can always add a new wire from battery negative to chassis).
