Suggetions for system to compliment my style of music
Ok I have a little time and I been wondering about this when not worrying whats going down at the moment. Anyways I listen to lots of metal ... slipknot, slayer, fear factory and am wondering what you guys would recommend for a cheap but decent system for that style of music. NOthing really extravagant jsut something to get the job done.
Some nice Optimus subs from Radio Shack! Or better yet... K-Mart Blue Light Special No Name subs!
*ha ha* Just kidding. It's all personal taste. You're best bet is to take some of your favorite cd's, and go to a local stereo shop and listen to different types of speakers/subs with YOUR music, and create your own opinion. But some subs are designed for bass, and some are designed for sound quality. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Kenwood subs are really good for metal/rock music. Good luck! wink.gif

So are JL's I would sy they are the best for that kind of music. The JL's aren't set up really to be a big db sub. They are very clean, not that expensive and only take up a little bit of space for the enclosure they require are small. But if you don't like JL's the thing you want to look for is 2 things are size, for that kind of music don't get anybigger than a 10 inch sub for they produce the tightest base, and efficency by that I mean how efficent they will run with the amount of power you supply them and the amount of distortion to frequencie level they produce (you want this level to be low).

Hellz yeah! I've seen everyone except Slipknot..dying to see them. Saw Pantera/Soulfly in April. Need the heavy stuff but I'm equally down with anything electronic.. drum n bass, dance, breaks (chicks dig it better than metal wink.gif)
Anyhow I have Infinitys all around and 2 12"s in the trunk. I'd personally go with the JL 3-10"s box for metal..nice, tight, and clean. LOL that sounds naughty tongue.gif

Every one likes their music to sound different. Definitely go to a shop with some cd's and take a listen to some stuff(only the stuff in your price range though, listening to too much high end stuff makes you take out loans to get it). You could probably get a deck with decent power for your speakers and get a decent sized amp and a single or pair of subs.

Definately right. Now this is a subject I know alot about. I listen to everything to Jazz (Kenny G) to Pantera/Metallica to Country music. Dont like Rap or hip ho too much though.
When I install a system for someone who listens to this stuf I want the tightes bass possible. I always use JL's. Go with the 12W6's. two of them. They are a 6ohm dual voice coil. Put them in a sealed enclosure. JL makes one for them. I can remmber which one it is off hand, but the box has two seperate chambers for the subs. These are 12" subs. You can use 10" but dont recomend them. If you want it really loud the 10's will pop. (Not enough excursion lenth to handle the punch). The box should be around 0.75-1.75 cu.ft per sealed side. No bigger, no less. As far as the amp, I use the Soundstream Rubicon 555 or the 355 models. When you or the install place wires the subs make sure they wire each coil in parallel with each other this will give you 1.5 ohms of impedance. The sounstreams are actually good to .5 ohms even though they may only advertise 2 ohm. This sould give you about 300 watt to the subs total. Pleanty of thump for rock music. It will Be tight bass and really clear. Oh almost forgot one thing a crossover for the subs. You can use the one on the amp but I reccomend using a seperate crossover. Anyone of moderate price will do. Some people may talk about frequecy leed over, but its not as much of a deal when making a system for rock music. Use a crossover frequency of about 80hz. Any lower than that you wont get any punch and if it is higher than you may hear the subs pop once in a while on stuff like a rolling bass drum.
Hope this helps ya out. NONE of this stuff is too expensive. The amp should run you about $350 USD and the subs around $150 USD a piece.
Keep in mind if you go with the 555 which will pump out about 300 watts to your subs vice the 355 (200watts) you will need to upgrade your alternator to minimize Headlight dimming.
Ok let me but in here. First a 10 inch JL Audio sub will not pop and they are by far the best size for tighter bass which is produced in rock, country, contemperary for they will produce the smallest and tightes wave of low frequencies. I don't know where you think a 10 will pop but I think your nuts (no offense) plus there rated the W4 and W6 for peak handling of 600 watts. Second even if you have got a 1000 watts of power in your trunk you do not need to go buy a bigger alternator the things you need to buy are stiffing caps a 1 farad cap is good up to and including a 1000 watts although if you are building a "I'm coming to the db nations, I will break every window in town and make grandma's heart stop when she gets in the car" then an upgraded alternator is a good choice but there goes your electrical warranty and a whole lot of cash not to metion if you can even find one to fit a Hyundai. You can also put in a Streetwires gel cell battery in the back by the amps with a circuit breaker inline from the main battery to the gel cell that way you can switch the breaker and have your system run off the gel cell. And as far as the x-over is concered it is good to have but if you buy a good headunit with a sub output and sub level controls and a good amp then it will already have a x-over in it.
