Im planning on re-doing my trunk. now to try to keep cost at a minimum im looking into speaker wire.
How much difference is there between the speaker wire sold at car shops, vs those sold on audio websites by the likes of Stinger, Kicker etc. and the stuff they have at Home Depot?
I tend to think a wire is a wire is a wire...
If im wrong, how terribly wrong am I?

Can get into massive arguements but for the most part youre correct. Now if you intend on installing $2000 worth of equipment then yes get somethin with pure copper and lots of strands

More strands = more flexible = easier to install. Wire for a house may not be rated to withstand the temperature extremes and chemical exposure a car-specific wire should be. Be sure you are getting what you need, but if it comes from Home Depot or Radio Shack, if it works it works.

Single wire is band. Multi core is the way to go.
