Speaker Help
^^^Not necessarily true. In my car, the brown is positive on my right rear speaker and negative on the left rear speaker. But then again...all the wires in my car are different colors than everyone elses... sad.gif
DUde, tibby01 is a good guy and all ( you really are), but hes very wrong. If you have the wires switched they will work, but i doubt youll get any bass out of them. Iv learned this through experience and reading. So, check them by seitching one, then turning it up. If that doesnt work do the other one. you might have to try a couple different combos for it to work, becuase if ones worn itll mos likey make them both sound bad.
Also, to my understanding speakers "pull in" they dont push out. When a speaker viberates it will flex an equal distance in both directions, but the first movement will be inward.
Edit: Tibby01 i see that you corrected yourself, sorry.

This is what we call "out of phase". When all your speakers are in phase, the woofers will all move out at the same time and move in at the same time. When you get one speaker out of phase, polarity reversed, that one speaker will be moving opposite of the other speakers and your sound waves will cancel, hence the lack of lower frequencies from the speakers. I doesn't matter if the positive is on the negative or vise versa, as long as they are all the same.
My opinion, fade your radio to the rear, then switch the terminals on one of the speakers, if it sounds worse, then you had it right to begin with, if it sounds better then go with that. After that you want to fade it back to the front and make sure it still sounds the same, since some speaker manufacturers will design their speakers to move out when others will move in.
The alpine type s and type r speakers sound best when ampilfied, I've never heard them sound good on just a HU. Your gonna want to send at least 30 watts continuous to each speaker so they sound good. If you don't want to spend much money, I would go with some polk db690 speakers, they will sound good on anything, but thats just my 2cents.

I think I have the polarity right because I am getting bass, its just I thought these speakers would put out a lot more without an amp. But I guess I was wrong. So looks like I need to save up for an amp.
Thanks for all the help everyone.

You can often get a good brand 50-75w x 4 RMS amp for under $100 on ebay. I recently picked up a new Kenwood KAC-8401 for $110 shipped, which has some nice configuration options and sounds great. It's 60w x 4 RMS and sounds amazing pushing speakers rated for 80w RMS.
I would say go for 50 watts RMS per channel minimum. It's not much more expensive than the 35w amps.
Check your speakers visually and make sure they're in phase.

How about this amp http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_co...tore=&catid=306
It's 4 channels and has 80w per channel. It almost seems too good to be true for only $60.

they just wont work if the wires are switched. so yeah, you were hoping for more out of the speakers.
i bet getting a seperate amp to run them would make them sound better.

zoned019 is right. It is always best to overpower your speakers, but adjust them so you DO NOT blow them. I have Alpine 10" type R's, rated at 300 RMS, I am running about 600RMS. Also, I have a 400 watt 4 channel connected to the stock speakers in the car. Its amazing what more power does. The stockers really sound good now! So... Get a better HU or buy an amp for your doors and backseat speakers.
yeah, but technically your not over powering you probably not runnning at 600 watts, or your speakers would be shot, you just have your very powerful amp running lower power which it could do easily. a 300watt amp would have worked as well, but you definently wouldn't want a 18 watt...

Well I checked and my HU says 18w RMSx4. I dont know if that is good, decent, or bad. Would hooking up all my speakers to an amp and leaving the HU alone give me more power, or do I need to replace the HU also?
must be a pretty old hu meant to be used with the factory speakers, you would get better sound from a newer hu.
edit: i just reread and I'm a bit cofused on the last one, when i read i was thinking max still... if you don't want an external amp just get some low wattage speakers and you'll be ok.
