When a manufacturer recommends a certain ammount of air space for a speaker, does that air space start at the speaker cone, or the housing?

It's the inside dimension of the box = To cubic feet airspace...

so air space completely disregards the speaker? That dosn't seem right. My speaker requires 1.5 CuFt of air space. It's 1400W with quite a throw. The cone and magnet takes up at least 1/2 CuFt.

I belive so... On all the sub's I've owned and built boxes for their specs to build a box does not count the cone area.

They mean 1.5 cubic feet of free airspace meaning that if your speaker takes up .5 cubic feet then the inside of your box needs to be 2.0 cubic feet total.

air space is teh sapce not including the cone. thats why with most subs they give you the volume of everything behind the ring so you can factor that into your calculations.

every company gives you the dementions of the box you should build or purchase. their not stupid, they already figured that the speaker takes up space. Just build the box to the dementions they say to.

is that the cone or the cone and magnet or the frame of the speaker?

I don't have the origonal specs anymore on my 1400W sony xplod speaker. I lost them a long time ago. different websites are posting different specs... I'll just call sony.

i have built a few boxes, and i know the companies reccommend a certain amount of airspace, but i designed a box to company specs (i had badass 12" kicker comp VRs) and one box with less airspace.. the box with a lil less hit ALOT harder, and sounded better than the one built to specs..

just FYI
