Are proximity sensors good or more of an annoyance?

Default Are proximity sensors good or more of an annoyance?

I like to park with my windows open alot in the summer and I was thinking about adding a prox sensor to my viper alarm. The only thing Im worried about is false alarms. I know people who have them and any time a bird flys by or someone walks near the car it goes off. I only want it to go off if someone sticks their hands or arms inside the car with the windows down. Does anyone know if you can adjust the sensitivity of the prox sensor separately from the alarm itself?

This is my alarm http://www.viper.com/ShopViperProducts/Ite...?ItemCode=5102V

Im asking here because Im sure someone somewhere has a proximity sensor on their car and can post if they're able to set a separate sensitivity from the alarm itself. So unless you can answer my question please dont tell me to go ask Viper or to search on Google or do something else because Im asking for help from Hyundai owners on a Hyundai forum that has done this in the past.

yes you can change the sensitivity of a prox sensor but it depends on the versatility of the model itself. when i had my viper alarm back in the late 90's i bought the best prox sensor at that time and you could literally adjust it like a gain on a amplifier. i had it set like you want (only going off when someone stuck their arm inside the car) and it worked great.

you get what you pay for literally with every upgrade you can buy for a alarm system. I still would love to find a old alpine 8080 security system that had a keypad you could program things into that. mark fakuda's blazer (past IASCA SPL champion) had his setup with close to fifty presets, lol. damn alarm would open and close every door, move amps, it was crazy.

but in the end the more ways you want to fine tune the more expensive and more of a chance for it to go out. I would look into this prox sensor. chirps when you get near the car, actually goes off if the interior field is disturbed... http://www.viper.com/P-508D/Invisibeam%c2%...turbance-Sensor

i think it was 187sks that had someone randomly come and bump his car until he lowered the sensitivity to the point where it was almost never on

then they broke into it

best security would be a alarm with a pager, and a .45

I like the idea of a pager also.

I don't see the purpose of a proximity sensor. People will mess with it til your battery dies. Just lower the shock sensor sensitivity so anyone bumping into the car or leaning in the window will set it off.

I'm still not sure the purpose of a proximity sensor.

Btw Mrs. Kthanxbye, I think Stocker was more than appropriate in his question. You're asking a question about the specifics of a certain viper alarm model, to determine if your model can accommodate the added accessory. Viper would be best to ask, or a viper dealer/installer.

You don't have enough posts yet to be a smartass

pagers are pretty worthless if you are in say a mall. any steel structure will never let you have signal. i never got a signal three times in three diff places in the same mall and yes it was a viper model.

now if you wanna talk aboiut car alarms that text you, that is another story. but then again, you pay another fee i think for that.

^ if you're in a mall, your car can be 100% gone by the time you get to the parking lot.
