I had a chance to work on an audiometer booth not too long ago. I had a dB meter in my car. My car reached 129dB when monitoring @ 32Hz center frequency range.. This is a calibrated instrument traceable to the national institute of standards and technology, meaning 1dB = 1 dB. I just thought this was cool and had to take a pic and post it here. Anyone know what freq they monitor at a standard dB drag?
Btw.. my seats vibrate with my music and I couldn't get a good pic from my camera phone.

That's comming from my system.. 1 12" speaker and the rest of the door speakers too set to maximum distorting like mad, sounding like crap with Dr Crankenstein cranked up as loud as possible just to obtain the best reading possible from the dB meter. I hope i didn't damage my xplod. lmao.gif

1200W amp, 1400W dual voice coil speaker bridged to 2 ohms.
I was pretty impressed, considering they make 136dB and win dB drags. But 10 dB = twice as loud.

damn that's awesome.. it's really nice! i saw a program on discovery where alpine placed sensors on the ears of an actual dummy to determine the best possible amplification based on the position and quality of the speakers.
can it crack an egg? haha...

good job man. i wonder what my db level is in my ride, it should be a lil higher than what you have because i'm running similar system at 1ohm.
why dont u enter a contest and see how you do?

not at that DB level. even to get through a 1st round, your gonna need at least 136-138 db's. thats about the norm at most drags for your basic street 1-2 class, which is where that set up would put you.
last set up i had tested was two jlw3's with a shitty power acoustic 1800 watt amp in a subzone box with a audiocontrol processor, and digital 15 farad cap. hit 148.3 verified.
the stereo i just built will easily clear the 150's. that was my main goal when i built it in the 1st place along with quality.

^^Winner of the contest I watched ath the NOPI nationals last year hit 136 with 1 sub. I think that was super-street A. I might be wrong. Everyone in that class was 134-136. I'd need to do some tuning, but I think I could probly hit 134 if I enhanced my sub to trigger the resonant frequency of the car. It's somewhere around 50hz. Maybe a bit higher.. I've got my sterio tuned to a center of 160hz.
Where do they take SPL comp readings? Im not too familiar with dB drags, I have a little experience though. It seems the loudest sound comes from the dashboard around the glove box.

i used to compete back when they were quite popular. i could find a db drag almost every weekend if i drove out to chicago during the summers. theres a shop that still does them every friday night out in belvidere near me still, but havent been out for any of theres yet. there a newer shop, and ive been out of db drags for about 3-4 years now.
for your set up, the spl isnt bad. your stereo obviousely was designed for optimum bass from the placement. you should be happy, you have a decent set up, and still room to store stuff in the trunk, thats more then alot of members can say with big stereo set ups.
and if a car won only hitting a 136, then that had to be a SPL contest, and not DB. DB is just sound pressure and doesnt give a crap about quality. so there usualyl alot louder. the SPL contest are about proper staging, and quality, along with good sounding bass. obviousely there not as loud as the hardcore DB crowd.
ive seen people lay a layer of 4 inch cement on there car's floor to add strength so the car doesnt absord and lose DB. hell, ive seen people in compition actually run there subs ports down the frame well, and dump out at the dash right where the meter is to get higher readings. there are some hardcore guys out there, and some cheats.
i know when i competed, the meter was placed on the passenger side dash, 4 inch's up, 3 inch's out. that was the standard at the time, but from what ive heard, they have changed the location of the mic now.
