looks pretty nice man smile.gif i want to paint my dash but i dont know if i want to paint the whole thign yellow to match the car or not :

I think Duplicolor has a Metalcast Yellow now too.

Lookin good. i wanna paint mine...but i'm just nervous about fvckin somethin up and ruining my dash.

Just take your time, do one part at a time or have a schedule to do them all. I did them all at once and kept them all on seperate hangars, went VERY slow and made sure it all was perfect before moving on.

QUOTE (KayJai)
BTW, did you use a heat gun? Saves ALOT of drying time. Will also prevent any airborne lint / dust that will stick more, since it's drying way faster.

I've got a heat gun but don't like using it on paint, I'm always worried it'll start a fire or burn something. I'm impatient with those things. I had them hanging on some cut up hangers in my 2nd bathroom with the door closed, the light on, and the fart fan on. Took about 45 minutes for each coat to dry. The few times I found some lint on it when dry I just rubbed it lightly and it came off. No problems. Good idea though!

QUOTE (nexuz)
what kind of a clear coat would work best on it? I painted my wire cover with that same stuff, and very good results
(I actually did it, before comming here.. so I just taped the (H) and DOHC, instead of rmoving them.. but what clear coat you think work best..

Now, REDZ.. did you sand in between coats? I did 2 layers of primer sanding inbetween .. then 3 coats of silver with a 240 sandpaper.. and 4 coats of blue..
planning on sanding with a higher grade of paper befoe clear coating

Clear coat? We talked about it a bit before, I think it'd be WAY too shiny if you Clear Coated it. Talk to some of the folks with Orange dashes and stuff, someone put up pics on HA.com before with the horrible glare. That's why I wanted a somewhat dark color, and no clearcoat. Kayjai's is perfect, looks good and doesn't shine.

I did NOT sand inbetween coats with Metalcast, and also didn't use a Primer. Here's why...

1. Metalcast Basecoat IS the primer for the blue. They do have a paint adhesier you can use too but the Valvecover still looks perfect after 4 years, so I'll just leave it as is.

2. Metalcast Basecoat is supposed to be gritty, with all that metal flake. If you sand it at all you'll lose that look.

3. I basicly went with the exact same procedure I went with when I painted my valve cover, it worked so well. Just wash the parts with warm soapy water, scuff them up with a Choreboy metal wool or a green pad, let them dry, wipe them off to get off any residue, and paint in several even coats. I did 4 and 4 on the current setup.

4. I also didn't want to go for the 5 and 5 I did on the engine, or even any primer as the parts I was painting were VERY close in tolorance. Too much paint will be too thick and you'll get rubbing. I was VERY careful and I still have a tiny bit of rubbing on the ashtray cover. Not much I can do about it.

Thanks for all the good words guys. Alot.

I'll install it this week.

and this is one of the reasons I am slowly buying all the interior parts I want to paint and modify.. now if only blacktibs would ship so I can work on installing the polished aluminum trim ring I bought. It was made for the Mustang Bullit.. but it was almost a perfect fit for the first gen shift cover.

yup yup, that's me with the glare. Over the past couple years, I've completely learned to look through it. I don't see it anymore, and on top of that, having white paper on the dash of any car I'm driving doesn't bug me like it does everyone else i've driven with.

Redz, that looks great! The rubbing is almost unavoidable. You'll face it most with the ashtray, a little on the door open/handle (if you paint that), and when installing the center vents. That silver ring of the vents that you need to slide into the openings is very tight to begin with, X amounts of paint thicknesses make it nearly impossible to put them back in without scraping, just take your time, and be prepared to touch it up.

Here are the pics from HA.com

I can't wait to see the final thing. I just worry that the glitter is going to pretty intense... even without clear coat... drive around with a painted flat test thingie on top of the cluster to see how it'll feel... you may want to keep the top of the cluster a dark color... smile.gif

Redz, that looks awsome. I was thinking aobut painting my interior with the red Duplicolor Metalcast to accent the red piping on the interior, but after seeing those pics^^, I just don't want to deal with the glare. I was worried about that and that is what has been stopping me, but I have been thinking about doing one of the Dulicolor's chamelean paints that is darker and then finishing it with a mate finish clear coat to dull the glare. We'll see.
