How difficult is it taking apart rearview mirrors?

I have decided that I want to install a flush mounted flashing LED in the center of the back of my rearview mirror for my alarm system. In order to drill the hole on the back of the mirror and route the led and then another hole at the top of the mirror to route the wiring through it and up into my headliner, I would probably have to remove the mirror from the glass and then take it apart some how. Is there an easy way to do this or is there a good chance I could break the mirror into pieces?

For planning purposes, I would say it is a good idea to budget for a replacement mirror. Removing it from the mount is easy. Getting the glass out of the mirror, not so much. You might try instead a small surface-mount high brightness LED and very fine color-matching wires, all held in place with color-matching silicone rubber. MUCH easier to do than disassembling the mirror, and if it is done right, it could look OK
