Help!
So I finally got some time to install my guage cluster i got from DTN. got the dash out, removed the old cluster, got the new one put in and wired up, per the instructions i got. then when i turned on the key to try them out and start setting the needles, bam they started smoking. big cloud of white smoke came out fron the dash behind the cluster. i'm sure i wired everything right, i check it twice before i turned the car on. anyone know what i did wrong?

Big white clouds of smoke don't eminate from anything normally inside the cluster. Try it again, may have been dust, or it could have a forign object from the packing material inside the cluster.
You said it's been sitting for a while, it could have even been a bug or something. The inside of the cluster is made of plastic and metal which will burn black smoke. Same thing with the LEDs and resistors. It has to be something other then the gauges burning. Inspect for forign objects and try again.
I test the lighting system before they leave on a higher then battery voltage "burn-in". I take care to ensure the remainder of the electronics inside the cluster remains untouched. But the unit is not sealed because the stock lighting system was removed.

Sat down on yahoo for 1/2 hour this morning with Rgrintz. Smart dude. Used to be a electro-pneumatics technician working on IC microchips. We got everything worked out. Everything works well.
Smoke from cluster when inserted into slots.
-no issue, dust from behind cluster stirred up.
EL gauges function only on lowest setting.
-red wire conneted to green/white wire and black wire connected to black chassy ground wire
-rewired to use green/black ILL- wire instead of chassy ground black wire
Temp gauge maxes out when lights turned on
-Shifted/contacting brushes damage due to transport
-repositioned stepper motor contacts
All issues resolved.
