Just wondering if anyone here does glass work.
Waiting for my mat to get here from ebay so I can glass my tire well. Searched but only found a topic from last year linking to a tutorial i've read like 5 times already.

So whats the word? Anyone tried it out yet?

I've done plenty of fiberglassing but never a wheel well...What are you trying to do and maybe I can give you some pointers.

In the end I want to do little fiberglass projects for some extra $, but with the well I want to have a mold that will fit inside the trunk, and maybe have a little in-lay for an xbox. It'll be my first try with glass, so I just want to get used to it and see if I even like it enough to work with it more throughout the car. I have truck liner in the tire well right now, works good, but not great for show.

OK the spare well...thought you were doind the actual wheel well tongue.gif . Well as far as that goes you're looking at a pretty simple fabrication (assuming you want a flat surface with a recess) .
By far the most user frendly way is to make a template with a large piece of cardboard, that way you can trim/add to the exact shape you want. Leave a small gap to accomodate for fiberglass to wrap over. (Template will become part of your piece)
Once you have your template lay it out on a flat surface and tape it togeather on the back side.
Lay the mat out on the surface "floor"
Place your template.
Trace your shape then cut.... LEAVE 3-4 inches ( you as much as you can) to wrap around the cardboard, you may have to cut slices in the backside (where it wraps over) to get a nice fit.
Attach using staples, STRONG tape, etc... just make sure it's attached and doen't come loose.
If you have saw horses get them out and place your peice on it.
Now start brushing on the resin with a crappy $1-$2 bursh, use enough to make the mat look transparent and work patiently it will take some time and coat evenly top and bottom.
Put more mat down and coat
Mat and coat
Let set over night to harden
Sand with between 80-180 grit sandpaper
If it's too thin add another couple layers of mat and resin (then dry) till it gets to your liking.

As for the recess for your Xbox find a suitable place for the recess...and mark an outline.
Cut a hole in your new project and keep the peice for the bottom of your "hole"
Get some MDF at you local hardware store and make a open top box that the piece you saved will fit inside and is as tall as you need.
Glue and/or screw this box to you original piece with the hole in it
Lay a strip of mat as wide as you recess (this piece should fit across the bottom up 2 sides and onto the top about 6-8".
Now 2 more for the remaining sides that only cover 2-3" of bottom but still the same on the top. You can use staples to hole it nice and tight.
Coat with resin

Mat and resin, Mat and resin (the whole project), dry, sand smooth

Repeat untill staisfied

For final sanding use between 320-400 grit paper. And contrary to popular belief fiberglass needs to be primed before painting.

I left out alittle for space purposes...but if you need more help or a different design just ask fing02.gif
