Checked The Recording Level of Some Bass Tracks
I was trying to figure out what test tones to use for my sub amp (-10, -6, -3, or 0db), and I decided to run some tracks through the free Audacity program to see what levels the recordings were at.
(I implemented a low-pass filter of 12db/octave @ 100hz within the program since I am only tuning a sub amp)
For bass-heavy music like hip-hop, recordings were hitting above -3db and fairly close to 0db pretty regularly. This led me to decide to use a 0db test tone to ensure I will not be distorting the sub. (for comparison, none of the classic rock songs I sampled topped -6db)
I understand that there is considerable variance in how people like to set up their systems, and that some prefer a bit of distortion, or are trying to match mids/highs as opposed to going for full optimization. I just thought this info might be interesting to some.
