Can you get a ticket for illegal window tint when your car is parked? Like in a public lot? Theres a restaurant I go to now and then and I usually see police patrolling the lot. I have seen some officers out walking around too, looking at cars, and running plates even with no one inside. I’m curious if a ticket can be issued for something without a person being there.

I doubt it. To measure the tint they have to put something on both sides of the glass to measure the amount of light that can pass through. You're allowed to block out your windows in a parking lot with sunshades, not sure how tint can be any different.

It completely depends on the state. You say they are running plates on empty cars with no cause and the is not allowed where I am at. Every state has different codes. If your afraid to get the ticket for your tint being too dark then it is best to remove your tint. I am allowed to spray paint my rear windows if I so desire but some states are very picky.

If its a public parking lot, they could write a ticket. Is it a douchey move to write someone a ticket even though they are not there in their car? Absolutely! Could you fight it due to them not being able to use a light monitor to see how dark the tint it? Definitely, and most likely it would get thrown out.
