depends what kind of speakers really, if your just getting some to replace your oem ones that arnt much louder then you should be ok without an amp
if your going for more powerful speakers then you will need an amp for them to sound like there suppose to, like when i installed my 300w pioneers, without an amp hooked up to them my oem speakers where alot louder, these would distort at like 3/4 the normal volume

^^ sounds like an impedance matching problem. had you purchased 4-8 ohm speakers they would not have distorted.
there all 4ohm
made a post about a year ago and the general answer i got was that the deck was under powering the speakers so thats why they were distrorting at lower volume then the oem ones

Bringing up an old thread but with good reson. I am in the market for some new speakers and am totally new to anything dealing with electrical/speakers/lighting all that stuff. So I just started looking at websites like bestbuy and I've always just like JBL. Friends have had them and they sounded sweet. Plus my comp speakers are JBL and they sound really good, ha. Here's some links to some that appealed to me.
The JBL 6x9
And the 6 1/2'
I was hopin you guys could give me a short run down of what I have to do with harnesses and if I need an amp and all that stuff because I am pretty lost on this subject.

lol find me 8 ohm coaxial car speakers.
dexter buying just a new headunit will make the oem speakers sound really good(well, much better than stock). give that a try and if you dont like it worry about new speakers later.
