Hey!

I have got some 75W RMS 6.5" coaxials (as one of the stockers was buzzing) & some 80W RMS 6"x9" 2 way speakers. I'm wanting to upgrade my head unit to something pretty basic because my stock one is starting to play up. I've been looking at some head units with varying features & that have MOSFET 50Wx4 internal amps.

I have a couple of n00b questions:

1. Will I need an additional 4-channel amp to run my speakers? If so, how much power will I need to run the four speakers?

2. If the deck has only one pre-out, is that usable for the 4-channel amp or is it only good for a pair of speakers or just a sub?

Sorry, I've looked around a bit & I'm still unsure about this. Any help would be great fing02.gif

No you don't need an amp to run the speakers, but one can usually help. Someone could probably give you a recommendation as to how much power you would need for your speakers.
The pre out is to hook up an amplifier to either power your speakers or a sub. If you don't use an amp you won't use the pre-out. The speakers will be wired directly to the unit.
I wouldn't worry about running an amp unless you were going to upgrade to component speakers.

^ Ok, cheers for that fing02.gif

I thought I'd read somewhere that the speakers could be damaged by being starved of power, so I thought I'd check before installing them.

Ya a lot of people think that most speakers get blown by having too much power, but the most common cause is "underpowering" them. But you'll be ok with those speakers. Especially if you get a head unit with a built in amp. You could still go with a four channel amp if you wanna be hardcore wink1.gif

I'd suggest getting a deck with 3 pre-amp outputs, JUST IN CASE you might want to expand your system down the road. I'm an Alpine junky myself, so thats what I would suggest. But my advice to you is go down and just listen to a bunch of different brands and check out there styling as well. Then, make your decision. smile.gif

^ Cheers for the advice but I've already bought a fairly basic Pioneer deck: it only has the one pre out but I honestly can't see myself ever needing to upgrade my setup. I don't want a sub taking up space in the boot as I always use the boot & sometimes even need to put the rear seats down to load large-ish things into it.

I really don't like the way some of the new head units look these days... like spaceship controllers or something...

I chose this one because I liked the look of it... & because it was cheap. lol fing02.gif
