Default Alarm switch

As I was trying to look at the alarm that came with the car when I bought it, I found a small toggle switch by the fuse box inside the car. I flipped it, tried the alarm, doesn't do anything. Could it be for anything else?

Try looking in the owners manual of your alarm, it will explain what it is and how to use it. If you don't have a copy of the manual, you can probably find one online somewhere.

They differ somewhat from manufacturer to manufacturer in operation.

Well, in most cases, it allows you to disable the alarm feature while still being able to use trunk poppers, remote door lock etc. Some also allow you to disable the alarm whithout the remote. Just exactly how it works depends on who makes it. Look for the brain of your alarm, there should be a manufacturer on it. Just follow the cable from the switch, it goes to the brain.
