Default Adding multiple batteries for sound system

When people add additional batteries for their huge sound system, how do they keep the batteries charged? Do they hook up a second alternator or run them off the primary one?

I have done a series connection. The setup used the second battery solely for the system and the stocker was replaced with a big baddy. This is hard on the alternator I should mention. Fused the tar out of it and ran 0awg.
