I don't know about whatever transmission they put with the V6 but I know that the I4 transmission has clutch packs that will

will

be destroyed by using the wrong fluid. I'd want to be very sure the additive you put in there is compatible, before using it.

^ true ^ - the Tiburon/Elantra I4 transmissions were VERY sensitive to the ATF used (Hyundai SP-III? recommended I think)

Ignition coils are one of those things that can last the life of a car. Replace them when they fail. The other 2 are normal routine maintenance for any car. . . not what this thread is about.

The water pump fails around 60-70k miles. Change your timing belt at the same time.
People say the wheel bearings fail all the time. I think those people are hitting curbs. My first one failed at 111,500 miles.

from what I've read... once wheel bearings fail, they seem to repeatedly cause problems afterward and require multiple changes. I've gone 130,000 without a fail, or a water pump issue.

If a wheel bearing is installed properly, including proper preload, it should last as long as the one that came on the car. Doing it wrong will always lead to doing it again.

Thanks Jesus, I've never had one fail yet (at 150,000 miles) but then I've also never curb-checked the wheels.

lol - I can't curb my wheels... I'd ruin my bumpers before it got that far.

I've noticed quite a few references to the weak auto trans on this website, as well as the necessity to use good fluid. (Hyundai SP3) Two questions: Does anybody know what is wrong with them? Just weak overall build? Second question: There's a self service junkyard not far from my place that has some Sonatas of the correct vintage and a couple of them are low mileage wrecks. The transmissions can be had for $175 in unknown condition. If YOU had one, and the time to get it inspected/rebuilt prior to install, is there anything you would do to strengthen it in the rebuild process? I know it's not a popular item to modify, but..? Wishful thinking perhaps..

I lost my first auto at 62,000 miles. The second one crapped out 63,000 miles later. I then swapped it to a manual.
I believe both times it was my 3rd gear that eventually became non-existent.
