Default Time for a new battery

For my 2001 Tiburon. Mine is 5 years old and the battery will die over long weekends (drop under 11v). I don't want to get stranded this winter. I've bought batteries before and they were $50-60 tops. But when looking up this battery (124R), it goes for $100 for the cheapest walmart batteries. What gives? Is it a hard to find battery? I called Costco and they don't cary it.

Is there an alternative with similar post positions/size/CCAs for cheaper? Seems ridiculous for a battery. Just wanted to see what ya'll have done when replacing batteries.

+1 for the Red Top. I have run mine down under 10V when an alternator quit, and it is still going strong a couple of years later. It was worth the money not spent on a tow, to have bought the better battery.

Which rec top did you guys go with?

I'm told there is no 124R model. What else secures in the stock mount?

The one the guy at the counter at Advance Auto Parts said would fit. It did. All that really has to be there is a ridge on the bottom to catch the clamps, and posts on the top. The dimensions are not really critical.

I would just measure the area and fit in the biggest I could. As long as you can secure it and the post are oriented right.

The best batteries are Odysseys.

^ it's been ages since I had to buy a battery. Instead of giving you a 'nuh-uh optimas rule' response I looked into the differences between the two brands. The next battery in my car may be an Odyssey or the Sears Platinum rebadged Odyssey . The advantages of AGM technology like an Optima, plus greater capacity by not being spiral-wound, sounds like a winning combination.

The odysseys will outlast your car probably. I bought a used one off of ebay 4 years ago. It was dead as can be and took three days before it was fully charged. It would only take a trickle charge at first. I had been frozen too. But since then it's been good as gold.

Still if you are looking for something to run 12v off of for long periods of time a second battery is the way to go. You don't want to be at the point where the car won't start.

That's just lame that they cost so much for a stupid battery. I'm used to paying half the price for all my previous vehicles. I guess the cost of batteries has sky rocketed the past few years. I've always gone with Costco brand, they've always been good to me. I heard that a size 24 battery is practically the same size and would work too. I may call and ask for a 124R or 24 size.

A lot of Optima fans here, but I have yet to hear of anyone running a Braille, Odyssey or other feather weight battery. I mean, for the cost of Optimas you can really put something nice and lightweight in there. My previous poke was pure curiosity, but I've been researching this a bit on the Deuce. But with the Tib I keep getting a lot of "No's when it comes to aftermarket batteries. My take away here is 90% of that is based on nomenclature, because when it comes to my 2, people love to promote all kind hack-job mods.
