I got a 01 tib 5 speed, and have been noticing getting closer to top speed a sulfer smell or "rotten egg" fills up the car. They have a TSB on it saying that its the way that the engine is burning the additives in the fuel, not the cat or exhaust itself, and to stop it use and alternative fuel source. Since its for our cars i figured im not the only one who has experienced this, and i use pump gas, so i was just wondering if anyone had any luck getting rid of the smell and how they did it. Check you cat. A failing cat will make that smell. thats all i can think of.

 

I have the same thing and I just put a brand new exhaust with a high flow cat so...the cat is out of the question for me.

 

check your battery, ive herd that a bad battery will give a rotten egg smell. how are your starts, go to auto zone and they do a free battery check

 

yea, could be a cat failing.. could je burning belts maybe? Doubt the battery, you shouldn't be able to smell that going fast. I work at Auto Zone and I've seen NUKED batteries, they don't give off that bad a smell. I'd check all of your exhaust components. Tell them to throw the CEL scanner on it. It may have a hidden code unless your CEL is already on. Tell 'em store 2545 said to do it good otherwise we gonna beat 'em down. tongue.gif

Dude, you need to use the low grade fuel. the high octane fuel produces a sulfur smell if it's not completely burned. Our engines are designed for low/mid grade fuel.

 

thanks for the replys, i use 89 octane that shouldn't be to high right? . I currently don't have a cat on my car and just put a new exhaust and headers on about 3 months ago. The thought of the belts could be it cause they are quite old and sweeky. The battery its still good, did every test i could on it with my meter, even whipped out the VAT-40 and it passed the load test. I have no CEL and my OBD isn't reading anything and there is no autozone close to me, so I guess i'm going to go get a new set of belts and see what happens...thanks again

 

GET A CAT CONVERTER. The damage you're doing inhaling that crap is not worth the .5 horsepower you gain.

 

I wonder if thats why I always get sleepy when I drive mine...hummm...o well. My o2 sensor is not even pluged in at the moment would that make it smell?
