Ever since winter rolled around I've been having issues with starting, and it has progressively gotten worse. The car spins and turns over fine, it just doesn't seem to catch. Starting, RPMs go up to around 300 but then it falls flat on its face. I know the general procedure for troubleshooting this stuff, I was just wondering if anyone had run into these issues before.

Spark plugs are fine, wires are only a few thousand miles old and have no cuts/wear issues/etc. At first I thought my battery was doing bad, so I took it out and put an old stocker one back in. The one I took out I ended up using to start the Nova, and if it can get a Chevy 427 to turn over at around 40 degrees outside, then it should have no problem turning over the Hyundai.

Fuel is getting to the motor, you can smell it. In order to start it sometimes, I have to start it like an older car, giving it 25% throttle while starting it. Even with that it takes a very long time to turn over, if it turns over at all.

Car runs great once its started, no misfires/CELs/etc. It starts slightly better when the car is up to temperature, although not much.

I had a self inflicted problem like this. If you turn it over and it doesn't start, on the next attempt does it start semi-normal? When I did my fuel filter about a week later, it got harder and harder to start. Once warm it wasn't that big of a deal. Finally it didn't want to start cold to semi-cold (more than an hour of sitting) on the first attempt. It ended up being I didn't snap the top of the fuel pressure regulator on all the way, it popped off and was allowing fuel pressure to drop out of the rail/lines slowly after I killed it. If I would have had a fuel pressure gauge I would have seen what was going on. After it started no issues. If you haven't messed with the pressure regulator maybe its not sealing correctly?

Alty should be fine as the battery isn't dying, it has the juice to try to turn the car over several times before it does catch. It really doesn't start any better after the first attempt either.

As for sensors such as the crank position sensor, I would expect a code as there are several for it. The only code I've had as of late is a TPS code that I've been battling, however I wouldn't think the car would care what position the throttle is on startup.

I changed the Fuel filter quite a while ago, however I'll check it out.

has this only been happening post turbo? or pre turbo also?

i would say it COULD be your crank sensor going bad. that would be first thing i would check.. un plug it and see if you have the same problem, or close to it.

does it seem like your starter may not be catching sometimes? on my POS crapbox god damn, sometimes the starter just wont catch and turn the motor over. but my problem usually happens when the motor is warm, when its cold, it will usually eventually start, but after a 30 min. drive or so, the car wont start back up.. could also be the crank sensor, but i dont know. all i do nowadays is hit the grand am with a hammer when im mad.

go to murrays or something, and get the battery checked out, just trust me.. lol my optima just died (6 months old) and it would hold about 11.3 volts and i could barely start the car, sometimes needing a jump, and once it was started it would be fine. but it would take me a couple times to get the car started, and then it finally just stopped, and nothing would happen.. got new battery, free of course, and its all good.

do you have a voltmeter? if so, see what your car off volts are.

my FPR is in the tank with the filter, isn't yours on the end of the fuel rail? If the thing is leaking pressure off for any reason it would/could cause a hard start situation. The reason mine was leaking pressure once the pump was off was me not snapping it back on all the way, a bump must have knocked it loose. Do you have a way to check the pressure to make sure its not dropping off after the pump has stopped?

is your Auto or Manual Trans?

Manual Trans have a clutch sensor. My experience is that the clutch sensor is half-dying.
Some time I can start smoothly, but some time not.
Drive it to Hyundai Service Centre, replace the clutch sensor and get the problem solved.

If it was that sensor would it try and start then die? I would think it would just not start.

Pre-Turbo, although it seems to be worse lately.

I'll probably "borrow" a battery out of my Dad's truck and see if it gets any better. I originally had this problem with a newer battery, but it had started to leak a bit of acid so I tried an old stock one out of one of the Tibs and the problem stayed. Never know, might have been two bad ones.

Ye my FPR is on the end of the fuel rail. Should be ok, I'll check it though.

The clutch sensor should be fine unless its damaged internally. You won't see me at a Hyundai dealer anytime soon either. tongue.gif I would think the car wouldn't turn over if it was damaged. I just looked at it anad it seemed fine because I ordered a brake light switch and gay old Autozone sent me the clutch switch instead. lmao.gif So I had to get one off my parts car.
