Default Runs, but chokes out (not a Tibby)

Well my friend has a 91 Beretta GTZ with a crap-tastic 2.3L quad 4. Well we were trying to leave the camp site this morning, so he starts the car to warm up. It runs for 2-3 minutes, as normal, then all of a sudden just dies.

CEL came on... DOH!

We tried to start it, and it turned over and seemed to wanna start, you could hear it, but it just wouldn't go. So we hooked it up to a friends computer reader thingajigger (OBDII or something fancy-schmancy).

Bad TPS.

We replaced the TPS. It now starts fine... BUT the CEL is still on AND, as soon as you get anywhere near WOT it just stalls and sputters, sometimes completely chokes out. So we hooked up the 'puter thing again, expecting it to still say "bad TPS", it says "bad MAP sensor" or whatever the code is. So we'z like aiiight, replace the MAP sensor. Same problem.

It starts fine, but anywhere near WOT it just dies... and I'm talking like you can't rev it above 3k without probs which can make driving stick a lil' difficult (and Auto I suppose but I haven't driven one of those in a while smile.gif ).

We replaced a couple of different sections of vaccuum hose that looked a bit suspicious, but still no luck.

Any ideers?

Thx in advance!

Gary

PS - We have tried disconnecting both battery terminals for a period of about 10 minutes, then reconnecting it all, still a no go.

There is a module inside the distributor. From the year, it's probably a GM 5 prong. It acts as a breaker (instead of the ol' points) When it begins to fail, this is what happens. It could also be plugs/wires, or the rotor.

Disregard all but the wires and plugs if this car has a coilpack, which i'm pretty sure the Quad4 does not.

Heres a guess. Try replacing the computer my dads gm and all of my friends gm including a friend with the quad high output all had to replace the ecu to correct issue such as the ones listed. List price is near 700 dollars canadian. Try to find one in the junk yard to fix the issue.

Gm is well known for it in those cars.

Dis car has been 1 problem after another... oh well smile.gif

LOL

He brags all the time about how much faster his car is than my accent. He's had it towed 3 times in the past 2 months. I told him it probably is... when it's running.

My pops actually owns a dealership (Hyundai) so I am trying my darndest to convert him but it's hard to convert these damn GM people. smile.gif

Thanks for all of your advice, and I was thinking the same thing Jed, but I'm not mechanically inclined enough to get into that.
