Default removing valve / rocker cover

Hi all,

So i've been trying to search the forum for answers but couldn't find any information about taking off the rocker / valve engine cover and having it painted. i pretty much know how to have it painted but i'm clueless about taking it off.

Any specific instructions on how to get the cover off?

i've already done the spark plug and the belt cover.

will taking off the valve cover be as simple as taking the screws off and lifting the cover?

should i take note of anything else like potentially ripping the gasket? Cam positions?

How about torque when putting the cover back on?

I'd like to cover my bases before i even venture in taking the cover off myself.

Thanks for the help!

Webtech is your friend here. Will have all the info you require.

www.hmaservice.com

I believe they renamed it to www.hyundaitechinfo.com

Both should get you to the same place. Make an account and enjoy your service manuals online. : )

The old RDT account still works. I use it damn near daily.

hi tibbytib,

i know about HMAService and i think newtonnet has the same content. I can't make HMAService work at all.

here's what i currently have >>> http://www.newtonnet.co.uk/coupe/ser...d=12669#_12669

It really looks simple enough based on the diagram and instructions:

1) Take out belt cover

2) Take out sparkplug cover

3) Take screws off valve cover

4) lift cover off the engine itself

however, are there any other details i need to take note of?

1) Is there a chance that the gasket would rip when i take it off?

2) what happens to the upper, lower chain guide, and bearing cap (front / rear)? is there a chance for it to fall off?

3) are the cams "loose" enough for me to knock them out of timing?

basically, i'd like to know if this is a simple low-risk operation or not.

Thanks for the reply though!

You won't affect the cams/sprockets/guides/etc at all. Just undo the 10mm bolts and carefully lift it off (to keep the gasket in tact). When you are done, tighten it back down (but don't torque it down too much to avoid oil leaks). That's it, super simple.

I didn't think the gasket was re-useable? Why not just paint it while on the motor? Tape and newspaper can be your friend.

You shouldnt have any problems with removing the cover. Looking at your profile, says your tibby is 1997? I'd say you should replace that gasket anyway! As well as the seals for the sparkplugs. They are easy to change.

I think you'll have better luck painting it off your engine. Easier to prep and paint IMO.

i tried to paint it while on the block and it looked to be more trouble than what it's worth. too many spots on the cover i won't be able to properly spray while its still stuck on the block. i'd be able to prep and paint it better when it's off as tibbytib mentioned.

Anyway, looks like it's an easy procedure! thanks for the help guys! i'll post pics when done

Note that the bolts will shear if you over-tighten them. Observe torque specification!
