Placement Of Rear Axle Stands
I'm about to change the rear brakes on my girlfriend's 2001 Tiburon and I'm wonderering where is the best spot to place the axle stands. I was going to set them under the rear cross-member that runs in-line with the rear wheels... it just doesn't allow for a very wide spacing.
Suggestions?
Thanks

rear cross member?
if you are calling the rear crossmembers those beams that run lengthwise down either side of the car, then yes, use those.
they might bend a little though. i have found that just about anywhere you put a jack stand besides the tow points it will cause bending.

Actually you can put them on those crossmembers and they won't bend. You have to place the stand at the end of the beam near the wheel you want to work on. At the end of each beam there is 2 layers of steel over lapping eachother. This is much tougher then the beam with the without that layer and will bend slightly. You can only find the double layer at each ends.

No, not the lengthwise beams. That's where I'm placing the floor jack to lift up the car. I'm actually referring to the cross member at the back of the car that runs crosswise - between the 2 rear tires.
Based on what I see and your responses, there's not much solid area in the rear to place the axle stands. Guess I'm best to do just one side at a time and place the stand at the jacking point... at the end of the lengthwise beam right beside the wheel well.
I'd prefer to have the whole rear end off the ground as I want to bleed out the old brake fluid and be able to do both sides at the same time.
