Oil Cooler Position in Relation to Filter Debate
OK, another lunch on the line. I say the preferred location of an engine oil cooler in down-stream of the remote filter, as I believe hotter oil flows through the filter better, or with less pressure-drop than cooled oil. Realistically, the difference may only be 20 to 40 degrees, but I think it's best. My buddy begs to differ, as he's a contrary cuss. The only thing we can agree upon is paper-ended media (fram) is junk at any temp or pressure. Any thoughts?

Don't matter. However, I don't like the idea of running a remote filter inline with a cooler at all. The cooler lines should come off a thermostatic valve (usually a wax type) so oil only flows through it when hot. However, you don't want to shut off the flow to your filter. Therefore, my vote is you're both wrong (on both points, btw). Fram filters are just fine if you're not trying to get 15k miles out of an oil change. Tell Bob, the oil guy, I said I've got a Fram PH1A for his a*s.

I don't think it makes any difference. Most thermostats are too cold fore oil. Shouldn't be going to a cooler until it gets over 220F or so. I like a good oil to coolant heat exchanger and a big radiator.
How about where do you put your temp sender, before or after the cooler?

He was referring to a thermostatic control for the remote oil filter, which could be set to any arbitrary temperature.
Oil cooler: after the pump somewhere, but NOT after any sort of secondary high-efficiency/low-flow filter!

Most of the ones I've seen are built into the filter adapter that the cooler hoses attach to. They use a wax pellet and a spring. When the oil gets hot, the wax melts and allows the valve to open. They're not adjustable. They're usually designed to open around 170-180. When the wax cools, the valve closes.

I've seem the filter adapters that have a thermostatic bi metal spring. These come in 160, 180 and 200 degree flavors. These will port the oil to the cooler before the filter when active. There are also inline ones that have the wax pellet type mechanism too. Either one, all the oil goes to the filter.
The Hyundai screw on filter is a high pressure differential bypass in it at 20 lbs. It does not bypass easily so what is going out the pump is going through the filter.
